A Crab Spider and it's Amazing Silk Lined Shelter

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

I came across this tiny (5mm) Crab spider on the leaves of a Banksia tree (Banksia integrifolia) in my backyard. I was very impressed with the little silk lined retreat it has made by curling the end of the leaf. Females will use these retreats for laying their eggs. Crab spiders get their name from their ability to walk sideways. I don't have a precise ID for this one as yet although I believe it is from the subfamily Thomsinae.
