GREY TREE FROG - LITTLE PEPPERS FIELD GUIDE TO WISCONSIN REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS

in #nature8 years ago

Of all the Amphibians native to Wisconsin, the Grey Tree Frog is one of the most remarkable.

One of my favorite things that the Grey Tree Frog does is when it hibernates. Many aquatic frogs and turtles will just dive to the bottom of a pond or lake and hibernate there, underwater. The Grey Tree Frog hibernates in the woods though, not underwater.

Incredibly, it replaces the water in its vital organs with glycerols, because they do not form jagged ice crystals when they freeze, like water does. Remarkably, much of the frog can just freeze then, and it can “come back to life” again in the spring.

Replacing the water in the vital organs with something that won’t kill it when it freezes? I wonder Who taught it how to do that!

Thankfully, we have found a lot of Grey Tree Frogs in Arkansas as well, so we don’t have to miss this species!

That’s good, because the @little-peppers seriously enjoy these frogs too.

It's been so long since I even heard a frog here. Not many frogs live in the city i guess.
It's really sad because frogs are one of the coolest critters there is.

I remember the tree frogs and their nightly songs from where I grew up in Minnesota.

We like their songs!

Hey @little-peppers, thanks for sharing your really cool science lessons with us! Greetings to you from Switzerland!
