SNAPPING TURTLES - LITTLE-PEPPERS FIELD GUIDE TO WISCONSIN REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS

in #education8 years ago

The first creature we will feature is the Common Snapping Turtle.

The Snapping Turtle is one of the more dangerous reptiles in Wisconsin, not because it is aggressive, but because it is very defensive. Despite the intimidation and danger, it is one of the all time favorites of @papa-pepper.

Year after year @papa-pepper would head out into the swamps, ponds, lakes, and rivers of Wisconsin to find these incredible turtles. Most were caught and then released, but a few were given to family friends for soup.

Sometimes, @papa-pepper would even let one of his @little-peppers ride on his back by standing up in a backpack and heading out into the swamp with him. It allows the @little-peppers to see life from a very different angle, without even getting wet.

Here is the page from our Field Guide.

Also, in case you missed it, here is the INTRODUCTION to this series.

We also have a lot of video footage of different Snapping Turtles, so here are a few short ones for you to enjoy.

BABY SNAPPER

BIGGER THAN HE IS

ALBINO SNAPPERS

Have you ever seen Albino Snapping Turtles before? These ones were at a display, because they don't survive very well in the wild, as they have no camouflage and are more easily spotted by predators.

Stay tuned, as we will feature the American Toad next time!

I love that you thought ahead and made an account for the little peppers! Each time one of the peppers turns 12, you should offer to run a personal account for them until they're 13 and can take over. With the way you work on Steemit, the little peps will be professionals by the time they're 10.

Following and wishing the best for all the peppers!

Thanks man, I've got to plan for the future!

Wow those are some cool turtles.
We don't have any turtles in New Zealand. I'm not sure why.

Maybe they don't like that it rains a lot here ;-)

No Toads or Turtles... How do you survive?

I'm not sure that @papa-pepper could live without them!

We do have lots of other cools stuff though,
like tuataras - they are lizards that are older than the dinosaurs!
and they are not the only ones. We also have wetas - like crickets but really big. and they bite!
Then we have kea - mountain parrots - think of them as racoons that can fly.
@pappa-pepper would love it out here with all the weird creatures we have.

OK, I could live with that!

love it, check out my kids @steemkids they will release a lizard soon, we get him a few days ago now is time to bring him back to his home habitat!

great post

We love lizards!

Thanks for the science lesson!

@kus-knee (The Old Dog)
