The green brown terror is back -> Sargassum

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

One of the things you dont really think about when you have a Caribbean trip is seaweed. You think about white sandy beaches, azure blue water where you can see the bottom in, and the beach is spotless.

In general the Caribbean beaches are exactly this way, but in a certain period of the year this green brown monster also pays us a visit.

Sargassum is its name

And spoiling your beach fun is its game. Floating over the Atlantic which always has an Eastern current towards our little island to wash up on the shores there.

And now it is washing up on the shore with multiple feet at a time.

Which sucks because once it is one the shore it starts to rot and therefor be a potential threat to nesting turtles.

But apart from that it stinks A LOT because of this same rotting process

And its not super pleasant to walk through this nasty stuff, the dried out Sargassum scratches your skin a bit

What can we do about it??

Nothing really, I know some islands use the rotting process to create bio ethanol but I dont see that happening here any time soon actually, we cant even get rid of our 'normal' garbage. The increase of Sargassum over the last couple of years has to do with the rising sea water temperatures which makes a perfect breeding temperature for the seaweed.

What the difference is between Sargassum and other seaweed

Is that Sargassum has these little hollow balls attached to it as you can see. This will make the seaweed float and travel a large distance. From a plane you can even see these large fields floating over the water. Sometimes the current will let these little balls break of and stack up in a corner on the beach. Then you literally can hear a clinging sound from these balls collapsing on each other. Strange sound!

The only soul that is happy with this seaweed??

Is the one that loves to roll in dead fish that washes up together with the seasweed :)

All images were taken by me

Damn! Just got to wait it out then, the dog looks happy though xD

Yeah eventually some bad weather will come and take it all back to the sea. Which is better for the beach, but bad for sea life with rotting weed.

The end of this week some bad weather is on the way so it either might be gone of be doubled, depending on the current hehe

No worries there will be some fishes out there that feed on this. That's how nature works, everything is food. Just takes the right specie to see it lol

hehehe true to that!

(PS thanks for the awesome donation for the doggies! It will be sent out with the rest of the SBD after the post pays out ..coolness!!)

I am so glad that we don't get any of this on the Pacific side! It looks gross.

And it stinks!! Yeah be happy you are not getting any of this at your beaches!

I am grateful! These days I am grateful for a great many things. Your move must be coming up soon. Are you ready?

A perspective in life can change so much in just a couple of days as you know after this week in your country. Apart from the situation is the city, is it calm at your place? Or is fear slipping in a bit?

Move is end of the week! I am ready but not at all ready :D
Started with some packing to see if I can get all my belongings back in two suitcases again, if not...If my belonging stay here a lot of people with no roofs will be more than happy with it

Mentally? I dont think I will ever be fully ready in the end

We are waiting with bated breath to see what happens it the talks which are still scheduled to take place today. Here on the homestead, things are pretty quiet. We try very hard not to get caught up in anything...

I don't think we are ever ready mentally for the changes that come our way. We may think we are, but there is always something that takes us by surprise.

Loved all your images, and that you took them all lol! Holding each other to higher standards. Much love and fishy seaweed smells! :)

Hehehe you got it! Not only fishy but also rotty, it is super nasty.

Yeah..higher standards, some people are forgetting it!
