In Line with the Earth Day Celebration in the Philippines

We have known since elementary that we are living on Earth. We also know that it is the third planet in our solar system and is the only planet known to harbor living things. It is a place filled with verdant fields, colorful petals of varying flowers, and the sea buzzing with its dormant strength. The Earth's natural resources are vital to the survival of the humanity; we have been building cities and industries that we have exploited these resources up to the limit. In result, we are experiencing climate change that greatly affect us. This beautiful scenery is slowly fading its color and vibrant because of human activities.

I can vividly remembered how a girl named Severn Suzuki was able to put everyone inside the hall to silence. It was during the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro that Severn delivered her heartfelt speech for her generations and for the Earth. And upon hearing her speech on a video, I was moved.

"In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests, full of birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see. Did you have to worry of these things when you were my age? All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I'm only a child, and I don't have all the solutions. I want you to realize, neither do you."

Just like Severn, I wanted to show to the next generations to come the beauty of the world we are living in. Thus, I dream to become an environmental activist.

Earth Day,which happens on April 22 (annually), is a constant reminder for me to think of ways and do things that would help save the Earth. May you also be reminded of this day and celebrate it by doing things like cutting down what you throw through 3R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), conserving water or volunteering in a clean-up drive in your community. A small act of help will have a great contribution in the community.
