The Elusive Little Sparrow : Tree Sparrow

Unlike the common house sparrow. The tree sparrow is seldom seen these days. Very similar in looks to the common house sparrow but slightly smaller. But seldom found in your garden.

The numbers of tree sparrows have decline by about 90% since the 1970.

When i was a kid i used to spend all my time in the woods and fields and my main interests were the hedgerow wildlife.
Quite often you would see the tree sparrow and its nest in the hawthorn hedge rows of the farmers field.

Their nests were quite unusual compared to black birds and hedge sparrows (Dunnocks). The Tree sparrow nest were oval in shape with a small hole at the front where they entered, which lead down to their eggs or chicks
Today even though i still walk through the fields and woods i never see any tree sparrows.
Hopefully one day they will be back and commonly seen every year
