Treating Migraine with the right Diet and Supplements

Imagine what will life be like if you are having a Migraine attack every 3rd day and you are down with it for another 2 to 3 days. Which means you are functional like 10 days in a month and rest of the days you will be down with the Migraine attack.

One of my friend has been in this condition for the past couple of years suffering from Chronic Migraine. Initially the frequency used to be once a month and then it got to 20 days and then 10 days and it came to a level of getting it every 3rd day. She has had multiple treatments on this but nothing has really helped. All the Doctors would give her was a relief medicine which would temporary suppress the attack and then again she would be in pain. I have also been trying to help her in different ways but it was like we would try out something and there would be another complication.
Sometime ago I came across an article of Dr. Mercola, which had an in-depth information about why Migraine happens and how it can be dealt with. After studying the article and going through all the other relevant references provided in the article I decided let's give this also a try.
Before this we had tried for her going completely on a Vegan diet. Which she followed on for a year but it did not help her in any way and lately with all the medications her weight has also been going up.

So coming back to the article the first action we had to take was getting a test done for the basic nutrient check. The nutrient deficiency that play a major role in Migraine are vitamin D, magnesium, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and riboflavin (vitamin B2).To our surprise all the levels were way beyond the required levels and so far none of the Doctors have advised on that part. Vitamin D was just at 18. So after the test the first thing we did was got onto these supplements for her. The Vegan diet would have added up to a further nutrient deficiency and her deteriorating condition.

The other suggestion that the article had given was to get on a Keto diet. After following a vegan diet for over a year it was not advisable to completely switch on a exactly opposite diet which is the Keto diet. So we had to make a gradual shift. we started gradually with a complete Detox first and then a low Carb diet after which started with the Keto diet.
Ofcourse we were trying all of this without any Doctor's advice, actually she is so fed up of the Doctors that first we did put a thought we will go and consult a Doctor, but then we thought that if the Doctor did not get to the very basics of checking the nutrients level then how will it really help.

After 10 days of starting with the supplements she got a heavy swelling on her feet. It was not exactly known which one would have caused it, so we stopped all of them for 5 days and after the swelling reduced we started again with 1 Supplement at a time starting with Vitamin D, and then Q10, Riboflavin and Magnesium and it turned out that Magnesium was giving the side effects so we stopped on the Magnesium supplements though it is considered to be one of the most important nutrient for Migraine.
It is now over a month that she has been stable with her Supplements and Keto Diet and the result is that her Migraine attacks have started reversing. The duration which was last every 3rd day has now come to 10 days and being down for not more than 24 hours. Which is a very very good sign of her progression. I am so happy that this particular treatment has been working for her.

Just for information Foods that can fill up these vitamins are:
Magnesium-Dark Leafy Greens, Nuts and Seeds, Wild Salmon, Avocado, Bananas, Yoghurt Organic and no added sugar

Riboflavin-Spinach, Asparagus, Almonds, Pastured Eggs(Free range)

Coq10-Organic Pastured chicken, Brocolli, Cauliflower, Sesame Seeds

And the Complete No Diet for Migraine is:
Food and drink which has wheat and gluten, dairy, cane sugar, yeast, corn, citrus, eggs, artificial preservatives or chemical additives, cured or processed meats, alcohol (especially red wine and beer), aspartame, caffeine and MSG.

For a long time she has been on pills and I was never comfortable with that. Her quality of life was going down and it was very disturbing. I believe that the right diet and right levels of nutrients in the body will help cure any ailment, which really proved for her. It was not just a fluck. Her level D the very basic was way low beyond the required level and that itself was the first block for her body to sustain any ailment.
I am happy she is recovering and I am hoping that she is completely cured of her Migraine.

Migraine is such a complex thing. Vitamin D is synthesized naturally in the body in the presence of good cholesterol and natural sunlight. Expose the skin to good, high quality, morning sunlight and be sure there is a great range of natural fats in her diet.

Neck position and bloodflow are also pivotal in chronic migraine. Great yoga classes, swimming, pilates and massage also have a profound effect in healing and preventing migraine.
