Let's Talk About Roselle (Hibiscus Sabdariffa) - AKA Cranberry Hibiscus or Jamaican Sorrel
This is one of our prize plants in the food forest. We LOVE Roselle (Genus: Hibiscus / Species: H. sabdariffa) for several reasons. It's a plant that will always have a place in our gardens. It's delicious, nutritious, stunning to look at, an abundant producer (we harvest baskets full every few days! We have way more then I know what to even do with!!). If you plan to make jams/jellies for sale on your homestead I strongly suggest you consider growing this plant.
Roselle is more than just a stunning plant in the garden. The calyx (outer covering of the seed pod) is used to make a delicious cranberry-like, tangy tea. It's also used to make jams, jellies, fruit leathers, a cranberry-like compote AKA Hibiscus Cranberry Sauce (great for the Thanksgiving Day table!! Also makes great gifts.) and so much more. The leaves on the plant are edible as well! It's a win-win. Some people peel the casing off the branches to use as fibers for weaving baskets. Not much goes to waste with this plant. It's easy to grow too! On top of all of that, they are high in vitamins and minerals, are immune-boosting, help lower blood pressure, and are a great liver cleanser. It really is an amazing plant.

I'm working out a work exchange here at Kindred Acres to gain assistance with harvesting. We have so much there is just no way Kaliah and I alone can harvest. If I can work that out, that will gain us a ton of calxy in the process. I plan to dehydrate and possibly list the dehydrated calyx as well as other dehydrated tea blends in my shop. I'm not sure if I can make it happen this year but I'm really trying. We'll see. Kaliah and I were just out there harvesting more. We got two baskets full to the brim and if you looked at the plants you would never know we took a single one. There is still soooo much left we didn't even put a dent in it.
I am truly astounded at the variety of plants and trees that I did not know existed! Nature is so plentiful! I bet these have a unique medicinal quality too.
Yep, they sure do! We talk a little about their medicinal quality in the video. They are good for lowering blood pressure, immune boosting, and a few other things. ;) High in nutrients too! Nature sure does provide.

Haha! glad to inspire! Yes, they are very immune-boosting (as much so as elderberries). High in vit C and a host of minerals. They also help lower / regulate blood pressure as well as cleanse the liver.
