Leaked NASA Plans for Lunar Base by 2028

in #nasa5 years ago (edited)

The U.S. finally going back to the moon! Or maybe it will be the first time, if the whole original moon landing was fake and filmed by Kubrick as some believe. Who knows. But, this time we should be better able to determine if its real, I hope.

Ars Technica got their hands on leaked NASA plan lunar plans for the next 10 years. THere will be 37 rockets launches to the moon with the goal of eventually sending astronauts in 2024 to construct and permanent lunar base by 2028.

That's right. The sci-fi dreams and fantasy of the 50s, 60s and 70s, may not have been realized by the end of the last millennia, but 30 years later we might be looking at a real moon base.

If this works out, then that positions humanity into the next phase of space exploration to head out towards other places in the solar system. At least, maybe. Not sure how the radiation and cold would allow these projects to be sustainable, but small steps, right?

The infographic of the plan above "For NANA Internal Use Only" lays out the expected yearly development of the plan, with annual lunar missions starting in 2024. But the plan is far from set in stone. There are political and financial hurdles to overcome.

NASA hasn't come up with a cost for this grandiose project. However, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine has asked for an extra $1.6 billion for 2020 to start getting it going. Sources have told Ars that the estimated cost is somewhere between $6-$8 billion, per year! That's in addition to the existing NASA budget of $20 billion. And we all know how "planned" budgets go. They don't usually stay within the target.

International cooperation is another key point that needs to be ironed out. Partnerships like the International Space Station program show how important it is to have international alliances made to sustain a project that far from home.

Contractors are also under pressure to get hardware delivered to NASA. As of yet, Boeing is a let down with their work on the core stage of the Space Launch System. They've been working on it for 8 years already, and probably won't be ready for another 2. Then they have to keep delivering until 2028.

Democrats are unlikely to support the plan either, as many funds would be cut form existing social services like the Pell Grants. With an election coming up and politic fog setting in, the NASA plan may get stuck int he mud for a while, if it ever becomes realized.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

We can stop those stupid wars, with the US spending more on military than the next 10 countries put together then we can easily fund this thing.

Yes, stop the military madness, and use money for so many more beneficial things or humanity.

Girl scouts sell cookies, Salvation Army rings bells and NASA makes announcement. Net results, same same.

Yeah, nice ideas, but on earth things stay shitty overall.

What's the point on having a station there?

there is ice in craters. using the hydrogen as fuel, the moon can become a low gravity fueling station for missions further out.

To say "Hey, we're here, we made it!" :P maxsieg has a good answer for reasons that are better than people who simply climb mountains just do do it...

Well Ok. I get that. Climbing mountains is extremely fun. Climbing moons is probably way more fun :D

Good thing if it would actually take place. Our next step out there. SpaceX should help with Branson

I doubt if people return back from the moon whenever they go

One stop trip the moon, and stay marooned there... lol
