A couple of months ago I told you about how I started playing serenatas (read my post). In those days I was listening to all kinds of music that allowed us to expand our repertoire to take to the windows and doors of the chosen ladies. Although our intention was not to conquer the love, but to entertain musically, as is to be imagined, there was more than one person who "misinterpreted" our job as minstrels... But the main theme was in every song the same: love.

In those days someone suggested a song to me, of which I found many versions, but almost always I used to look for the original. The title of the piece of music: "El día que me quieras" (The day you love me) and the original interpreter: Carlos Gardel.

Although I was in advance familiar with tango, for me this was an extraordinary find, because it introduced me to one of the greatest idols, not only in Latin America, but in much of the world. Someone who became an icon and a reference for the music of the South American continent. It is worth mentioning that not only tango, there were many milongas and other rhythms that he played.

Born with the name of Charles Romuald Gardes, son of a French mother, his place of birth is an unknown that is still under discussion today, as there are those who claim, with evidence, that he was born in Toulouse, France, and those who claim, with evidence also, that the place of birth is Tacuarembó, in Uruguay.

In any case, what is a fact is that he lived first in Montevideo, Uruguay, and then in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a hard childhood and a youth linked to activities that led him to be arrested on several occasions.

In the Argentine capital he lived in the area of theaters, which is why he soon got different jobs in that area, sometimes in exchange for attending the shows. And it is at this time that he begins to let his voice be heard at family gatherings, at street corners (which throughout Latin America have been a meeting point for young people in the neighborhood) and in nightclubs of not very good reputation.

It is in those places where he begins to use the pseudonym "El morocho", which in Argentina and some other countries refers to a white race person, but with dark skin and hair.

The tango began to acquire the personality that we know today, which has elements of "danceable sadness", of melodrama, of reproach and relief. In addition, a large part of the language used in those songs was Lunfardo, which due to the background we mentioned about Gardel, must have been very close to his everyday language.

The language and themes of tango must have been two of the elements that developed the preference for tango in young Gardel. But his personal style of singing it was what gave the final impetus to him as a singer and the musical genre. The fever of the tango was unleashed in the voice of this artist.

From 1917 to 1925 his singing sprang up from the duo he had with José Razzano (known as Gardel / Razzano), but due to an illness of the second, Gardel went alone to Europe for a tour and is the final impulse for his international fame.

Tango fever and Gardel's fame also reached the cinema, where, although his histrionic skills were not at all enviable, the films traveled the continent quickly and with extraordinary success. For that reason he made films in Argentina, Europe and the United States.

On June 24, 1935, a strange and mysterious accident ended the life of this singer. He thus became an icon that lasts to this day. So it was also for me. Thanks to the serenades Carlos Gardel became part of #MyMusic.

Hace un par de meses les conté acerca de cómo yo empecé a tocar serenatas (ver la publicación). En esos tiempos estuve escuchando todo tipo de música que nos permitiera ampliar nuestro repertorio para llevar a las ventanas y puertas de las damas elegidas. Aunque nuestra intención no era enamorar, sino entretener musicalmente, como es de imaginarse, hubo más de una persona que “malinterpretó” nuestra labor de juglares… Pero el tema principal de todas las canciones era el mismo: el amor.

En esos días alguien me sugirió una canción, de la cual encontré muchísimas versiones, pero mi costumbre casi siempre era buscar la original. El título de la pieza musical: “El día que me quieras” y el intérprete original: Carlos Gardel.

Aunque yo estaba familiarizado de antemano con el tango, para mí este fue un hallazgo extraordinario, porque me presentó a uno de los más grandes ídolos, no solo de América Latina, sino de gran parte del mundo. Alguien que se convirtió en un ícono y referente de la música del sur del continente americano. Valga decir que no solo del tango, pues fueron numerosas las milongas y otros ritmos que interpretó.

Nacido con el nombre de Charles Romuald Gardes, hijo de madre francesa, su lugar de nacimiento es una incógnita que sigue en discusión hoy en día, pues hay quienes afirman, con pruebas, que nació en Toulouse, Francia, y los que aseguran, con pruebas también, que el lugar de nacimiento es Tacuarembó, en Uruguay.

En cualquier caso, lo que sí es un hecho, es que vivió primero en Montevideo, Uruguay, y luego en Buenos Aires, Argentina, una infancia dura y una juventud ligada a actividades que lo llevaron a ser arrestado en varias ocasiones.

En la capital argentina vivió en la zona de los teatros, razón por la cual muy pronto consiguió distintos trabajos en ese medio, en ocasiones a cambio de poder asistir a los espectáculos. Y es en esa época cuando empieza dejar escuchar su voz en las reuniones familiares, en las esquinas (que en toda latinoamérica han sido punto de encuentro de los jóvenes del barrio) y en locales nocturnos de no muy buena reputación.

Es en esos locales donde él empieza a utilizar el seudónimo de “El morocho”, que en Argentina y algunos otros países se refiere a una persona de raza blanca, pero con la piel y el cabello oscuro.

El tango empezaba a adquirir la personalidad que le conocemos hoy, que tiene elementos de “tristeza bailable”, de melodrama, de reproche y desahogo. Además gran parte del lenguaje usado en esas canciones era el Lunfardo, que por los antecedentes que mencionamos de Gardel, deben haber estado muy cerca de su lenguaje cotidiano.

El lenguaje y la temática del tango deben haber sido dos de los elementos que desarrollaron la preferencia por el tango en el joven Gardel. Pero su estilo personal de interpretarlo fue lo que le dio el impulso final a él como cantante y al género musical. La fiebre del tango se desató en la voz de este artista.

Desde 1917 hasta 1925 su cantó brotaba desde el dúo que tenía con José Razzano (conocido como Gardel/Razzano), pero debido a una enfermedad del segundo, Gardel parte solo a Europa para una gira y es el toque final para su fama internacional.

La fiebre del tango y la fama de Gardel también llegó al cine, donde, a pesar de que su capacidad histriónica no era para nada envidiable, las películas recorrían el continente rápidamente y con un éxito extraordinario. Por esa razón hizo cine en Argentina, Europa y los Estados Unidos.

El 24 de junio de 1935, un extraño y misterioso accidente acabó con la vida de este cantante. Se convirtió así en un ícono que perdura hasta nuestros días. Así fue también para mí. Gracias a las serenatas Carlos Gardel pasó a ser parte de #MyMusic.

Vor ein paar Monaten habe ich erzählt, wie ich anfing Serenaten zu spielen (Hier kannst du den Beitrag lesen). Zu dieser Zeit hörte ich alle Arten von Musik, die es uns erlauben könnten, unser Repertoire zu erweitern, um es vor den Fenstern und Türen der ausgewählten Damen vorzustellen. Obwohl es nicht unsere Absicht war, die Liebe zu erobern, sondern nur musikalisch zu unterhalten, wie man sich vorstellen kann, gab es mehr als eine Person, die unseren Job als Minnesänger "falsch interpretierte"... Aber das Hauptthema war in jedem Lied das gleiche: die Liebe.

Damals schlug mir jemand ein Lied vor, von dem ich viele Versionen fand, aber fast immer suchte ich nach dem Original. Der Titel des Musikstücks: "El día que me quieras" (Der Tag, an dem du mich liebst) und der ursprüngliche Interpreter: Carlos Gardel.

Obwohl ich den Tango im Voraus scho kannte, war dies für mich ein außergewöhnlicher Fund, denn er brachte mich mit einem der größten Idol in Lateinamerika und in vielen Teilen der Welt bekannt. Jemand, der zu einer Ikone und Referenz für die Musik des südamerikanischen Kontinents wurde. Es ist erwähnenswert, dass er nicht nur Tango, sondern auch viele Milongas und andere Rhythmen singte.

Am 24. Juni 1935 beendete ein seltsamer und mysteriöser Unfall das Leben dieses Sängers. So wurde er zu einer Ikone, die bis heute andauert. So war es auch für mich. Dank der Serenaden wurde Carlos Gardel Teil von #MyMusic.
