Two days ago I posted a song on @Dsound (listen), which I recorded several years ago. In this post I said that I would soon write about the original singer of this song, one that I like very much. To take the opportunity that the music he has always made is for dancing, I thought the ideal moment would be today for this release, which has the hashtag #danceweekend.

So, let's go! Born in the city of Santurce in Puerto Rico, he moved to New York, where he made his career as a percussionist and later as a singer. Because of his music, the way he dressed, and how he moved on stage, he was nicknamed "El Diferente" (The Different): Ángel Canales.

But the whole career of Canales is different. But let's start with the "normal". The Wikipedia in Spanish says about him:

He was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. At the age of eight he moved with his family to New York, where he lived in East Harlem. From an early age he received a great musical influence from the music of Cortijo and his combo and from Ismael Rivera, who influenced him most as a musician.
He started as Timbalero (Playing the Timbales) in a band led by guitarist Luis Torres. In Ray Jay's orchestra, he made his debut as a singer when he had to replace the original singer. Then he joined the group of Mark Dimond, the former pianist of Willie Colón. The group later changed its name to "Ángel Canales y Sabor".

Before Ángel Canales became a musician, he worked in a jewelry store and learned this profession until he became a diamond grinder. And this is one of the aspects that should be emphasized that he himself begins to invest in his musical project (and when I say invest, it is "seriously investing"). From his income as a jeweler, he decided to boost his musical career.

Canales began to produce his albums with the label he had made for that purpose: Selanac (his last name reversed) and begins a hard promotion without paying Payola, with some of the best musicians in the New York scene. In this payroll were two musicians, whom I admired very much. One of them has little information on the internet, but besides that he is an extraordinary bassist and cellist, he is also a wonderful arranger: Henry Robinson Junior III. The other is the trumpeter Steve Guttman, who also became, after completing his internship for Salsa, the musical director of the group Blood, Sweat & Tears (or BS&T).

Canales liked the sound of jazz players and the power of improvisation, as well as the harmonic and melodic concepts they used (always with the baritone sax as a rhythmic and melodic guide). These elements became as part of a very danceable repertoire the hallmark of Ángel Canales' music.

The first song I heard (and danced) by Canales was a very commercial song played at all the parties in the neighborhood I lived in, a composition by the singer, "Kung Fu Karate".

I quote once more a sentence that I referred to in my earlier publication:

Someone in front of whom it is difficult to remain neutral, without a posture. Many love him, others hate him.him.

This is Angel Canales! With nine albums financed by him, but due to his success, they were distributed by the most important labels of the moment. Despite the success in many Latin American countries, as there was no backup company, there were few tours outside the United States.

Anteayer publiqué una canción en @Dsound (escucharla), la cual grabé hace algunos años. En ese post decía que pronto les hablaría del intérprete original, el cual a mí me gusta mucho. Así que, aprovechando que la música que él ha hecho siempre es para bailar, pensé que el momento ideal sería hoy, para esta publicación que lleva la etiqueta #danceweekend.

Así que aquí voy. Nacido en la ciudad de Santurce en Puerto Rico, luego se mudó a Nueva York y allá hizo su carrera como percusionista primero y como cantante después. Por la música que hacía, por la forma de vestir y por la manera de moverse en escena, se ganó el calificativo de “El Diferente”: Ángel Canales.

Pero toda la carrera de este personaje tan particular es diferente. Pero empecemos por lo “normal”. Di ce la Wikipedia en español acerca de él:

Se inició como timbalero en una banda dirigida por el guitarrista Luis Torres. En la orquesta de Ray Jay debutó como cantante cuando tuvo que reemplazar al vocalista. Luego se unió al grupo de Mark Dimond, ex pianista de Willie Colón. El grupo luego se cambió el nombre a "Ángel Canales y Sabor".

Ángel Canales antes de convertirse en músico, había entrado a trabajar en una joyería y aprendió ese oficio, hasta convertirse en tallador de diamantes. Y este es uno de los aspectos a resaltar, que él mismo empieza a invertir en su proyecto musical (y cuando digo invertir, es “invertir en serio”). De sus ingresos como joyero decidió impulsar su carrera musical.

Canales empezó a producir sus discos con el sello que él mismo formó para tal fin: Selanac (que es su apellido invertido) y empieza una dura promoción sin pagar payola y con algunos de los mejores músicos de la escena neoyorquina. De hecho, en esa nómina estuvieron dos músicos que yo he admirado mucho. De uno de ellos es muy poca la información que se consigue en internet, pero es un abjista y chelista excepcional, además de un arreglista de altura: Henry Robinson Junior III. El otro es el trompetista Steve Guttman, quien luego de su pasantía por la salsa terminó siendo el director musical del grupo Blood, Sweat & Tears (o BST).

A Canales le gustaba el sonido de los jazzistas y la fuerza en la improvisación, además de los conceptos armónicos y melódicos que usaban (Siempre con el saxo barítono como guía rítmico y melódico). Estos elementos, en un marco de un repertorio altamente bailable, se convirtieron en sello distintivo de la música de Ángel Canales.

El primer tema que yo escuché (y bailé) de Canales, fue uno bastante comercial que sonaba en todas las fiestas del barrio donde yo vivía, una composición del propio cantante: “Kung Fu Karate”.

Vuelvo a citar una frase que utilicé para referirme a él en mi publicación anterior:

Alguien frente a quien es difícil permanecer neutro, sin una postura. Muchos lo aman, otros lo detestan.

¡Ese es Ángel Canales! Con nueve producciones discográficas financiadas por él mismo, pero que debido al éxito que tuvo, fueron distribuidas por las principales disqueras del momento. A pesar del éxito que tuvo en muchos países latinoamericanos, por no contar con una empresa de respaldo, solo tuvo unas pocas giras fuera de Estados Unidos.

Vorgestern habe ich einen Song auf @Dsound gepostet (zuhören), den ich vor einigen Jahren aufgenommen habe. In diesem Post sagte ich, dass ich bald von dem ursprünglichen Sänger dieses Liedes erzählen würde, einer der mir sehr gefällt. Um die Gelegenheit zu nutzen, dass die Musik, die er immer gemacht hat, zum Tanzen dient, dachte ich, dass der ideale Moment heute sein würde, für diese Veröffentlichung, die das Hashtag #danceweekend trägt.

Also los gehts. In der Stadt Santurce in Puerto Rico geboren, zog er nach New York und machte dort seine Karriere als Perkussionist und später als Sänger.
