My 2018: A Tour around my town: La Asunción, beautiful and historic city.
Hello dear friends, I will tell you about my hometown La Asunción. It is located on Margarita Island and is the capital of the Nueva Esparta state in Venezuela. It was founded in 1565. It has great natural resources and was constantly attacked by pirates, that is why in 1677 the construction of Santa Rosa Castle begins on a hill where you have control of the bay and serve to defend the city , years later this castle would become a key point for the Venezuelan independence struggle.
Today the castle still stands and is used as a museum, in the photo you can see one of the old cannons that were used to defend the city against the pirates and then in the battle of independence.
La Asunción is proud to have the oldest cathedral in the country (Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción). Its construction dates back to 1570. The building has a rectangular shape with large pillars that support the roof and its walls were built very thick and massive to be protected from pirate attacks, this is why it has been preserved over the years. The church was declared a historical monument of the city.
The bell tower is still operative and can be heard at the end of the eucharistic events.
This boulevard is next to the church and there are still old colonial houses.
Strolling through this beautiful city we can find the Colonial Bridge, it was built in 1608 on the river that by that time used to overflow frequently. In 1914, in a remodeling, the bridge was baptized with the name of the date on which the Battle took place that sealed the independence of the island "May 4, 1810". The stone street that leads to the bridge is named Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, who was a hero during the independence war.
It should be noted that this bridge is more than 400 years old, and it is still operational for people, only few renovations have been made over all these years.
In this photo you can see the name of the street Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi that was named in honor of this great heroine.
This city has a great cultural and musical history, but regrettably the traditions have been lost a little, this is why new initiatives seek to rescue the tradition that was had in this beautiful city. One of these activities takes place every Saturday with the handicraft fair, which seeks to rescue values as well as tourism. In this fair you can see crafts and typical foods of the island.
Delicious homemade meals.
The heat is strong, for that a refreshing drinks.
Here I am eating an empanada, which is a fried dough filled with cheese or any ingredient that you like.
There is also a space for music, local artists and from other parts of the country show their talent and delight all those present with their beautiful musical notes.
National talent, sharing our values and traditions.
