Hunter's Moon - Troilo

An Experimental Trip

Tonight I decided to play again this good "old" song, Hunter's Moon, composed by Andy Mckee in 2010. (Modified a lot by myself over time)

It's a tune I've tried to learn 4 years ago, but I never practiced it enough to be able to play it perfectly. But according to me, there would be no beauty without a "zest" of imperfection.

For the ones who know the original, you'll hear that I'm improvising a lot, so it doesn't really sound the same. But according to me, I think it's always a good thing to not copy the tune entirely. I always try to put a bit of my own feelings and personality in it.

There's a lot of mistakes, forgive me, this tune is REALLY hard to play, tiring for the fingers and the brain.

But I'm sure you can learn to enjoy the imperfection in music... It adds something unique to it. (Ok, haha, maybe it's just an excuse.)

But I'll quote Marilyn Monroe that one day said: "Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."

Ridiculously mad and imperfect. But so happy.

I have to say that I felt so good, feeling again the atmosphere of this mysterious tribal tune alone in the darkness of my room. I agree. This sentence sounds strange. But who cares? Here is my meditational lonely evening.

Go hunting, try to catch the moon.

  • Your bullets: the strings, shooting notes.

Nicely done troilo :) I have had a lot of my students do Andy McKee material over the year. Challenging, to say the least :) I remember when he first came into the spotlight with "Drifting." Many people (myself included) had not hear anything like that. Over night my students wanted to work on it.

It is wonderful when an artist comes along and makes us rethink how an instrument is used. Jethro Tull - Flute, Andy Bird - Fiddle, Frank Zappa - everything ;) It is exciting to try these new techniques and consider what lies ahead of us?

Keep making your music troilo. Following
Cheers,

Hey thank you Bucky! Yeah you're right, challenging. I've learned guitar by myself watching youtube video, and the first complete percussive fingerstyle tune I learned was exactly the one you're talking about: Drifitng by Andy Mckee. I made a post about it here.

Yes, it's wonderful, I watch almost everyday new marvelously talented guitarist emerging from nowhere on Candyrat records. (Youtube channel)

I will, thanks a lot!

Cheers, Troilo

Hey, when you use the guitar in the let's say, not typical way, I feel you lose consistency in the rhythm. Be careful not to use the "perfection is boring" argument to not to improve yourself. You are very talented and this technique is not easy at all. Nobody is looking for perfection here, what the audience want to see is somebody who is giving the best of himself. I don't know how often do you currently practice but you deserve to give yourself more value by practicing at least 15 minutes every day. I do it like this and it really pays. Is better 15 minutes a day than 5 hours every month. even when you don't feel like practicing, we better do. The small decisions we make every single day are the ones that shape our destiny.

Congratulations for the good job though, have fun! I will keep an eye on your videos :)

Hey you're totally right! But it's so hard to keep consistency in the rhythm of this tune. Haha, and yeah, I totally used this argument, but it's kind of ironic, because I know it would sound much better if it was perfect. (If perfection really exists).
And I have to say I'm always trying to give the best of myself. I practice way more than 15 minutes everyday, but on a lot of different tunes, some song, some covers, some originals, other music instruments, skateboard, juggling, painting, and tons of different activities. So you surely can understand that it's difficult to keep a consistency.
For example, I was able to play this tune really well 3 years ago, but forgot it a bit with time... I should maybe had trained it a couple weeks again to get it properly. But it just went through my mind like "Oh! I forgot I learned this song long time ago. Let's try to film it!" I was also thinking: "Who cares if it's not perfect, it will maybe motivate some people to play it better than me?"

I'm honored to get a such critical and constructive feedback Catherine. Thank you! :)

yass! love this!

I'm happy that you liked it Karen. :)

Sebuah music yang bagus dan sempurna saya menyukainya

Terima kasih banyak, saya tidak berbahasa Indonesia, tapi penerjemah membantuku. ;)

Very cool. I like the variety of sound you get from the guitar on this song and the mysterious lighting situation.

wow, everything about this video is awesome... I've never heard of Andy Mackee, but i'll definitely check him out as well as follow you. Keep up the good work!

Oh I'm really happy that I made you discover a new artist. You'll see, his tracks are amazing! Thank you mate!

Amazing talent I don't see any videos of Shang Tsung playing like this!

Haha, Mortal Kombat! Maybe he would learn it easily... :)

Dude! This sounds soo good!!
I love the guitar tapping! :)

Thanks Acromott! It's really fun to play, the feeling of motion with music is really pleasant!

I like it! "Ridiculously mad and imperfect" ---> such is life ;)

If I tried something like this, the video would end with me throwing my guitar across the room in spurt of frustration, lol

Well done ✌🏼🎶

Haha, yes, exactly. :)

Oh, I'm sure you wouldn't, I watched your original song, and you have already the skills to learn any tune. Maybe the only thing to overcome would be, like you say, frustration. ;)

Thank you!
