Chuck Leavell's Piano Solo on Eric Clapton's Unplugged Special was a Game Changer. Part 3
On a national level, Chuck had achieved recognition and a certain level of fame as a member of the Allman Brothers Band. However, his playing on Eric Clapton's MTV Unplugged Special introduced him to the world. Some critics didn't appreciate Clapton's Unplugged album, but the public certainly did. In 1993 the Unplugged Album received three Grammy awards: Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, Album of the Year, and Layla won Best Rock Song. Just in Germany the album sold 1.25 million copies, and it stayed on the charts in Austria for 46 weeks.

Excerpt from my Chuck Leavell interview
Alan Bryson: AAJ: Let me put you on the spot. If you were preparing a time capsule for your great-great-great grandkids and could only select one example of your playing per decade, what would be your spontaneous pick for the '90s?
Chuck Leavell: The '90s would be “Old Love” for sure. I think I was very much like a coiled spring on that show. The fact is that I had worked with Eric for a while, but basically as a second keyboardist behind Greg Phillinganes, for whom I have immense respect, and who is a dear friend. Greg resigned during our tour with George Harrison. (Harrison and Clapton were touring Japan together.) Eric came to me and said, "Listen, I'm gonna carry on after the Harrison tour, and the next project is the Unplugged project." He asked if I thought we should have another keyboard player, or would I like to have it on my own. Well, I immediately said, "Let me have it on my own."
Up to that time I had just been playing pads and simple support for Eric, so having it on my own gave me the opportunity to step out. Again, I think I was very much like a coiled spring. When the opportunity came up on any of those solos, I was anxious to step up.

Alan Bryson: Eine schwere Frage. Wenn du eine Zeitkapsel für deine Ur-Ur-Enkelkinder vorbereiten würdest, und nur ein Beispiel deines Spiels pro Jahrzehnt auswählen könntest, was wäre deine spontane Wahl für die 90er Jahre?
Chuck Leavell: Die 90er Jahre wäre sicher "Old Love". Ich glaube, ich war sehr ähnlich wie ein Springteufel in dieser Show. Die Tatsache ist, dass ich mit Eric für eine Weile gearbeitet hatte, aber im Grunde als ein zweiter Keyboarder hinter Greg Phillinganes. Er ist ein lieber Freund und ich habe immensen Respekt vor ihm. Greg trat während unserer Tour mit George Harrison zurück. (Clapton und Harrison waren gemeinsam auf Tournee.) Eric kam zu mir und sagte: "Hör zu, ich mache nach der Harrison-Tour weiter, und das nächste Projekt ist das Unplugged-Projekt." Er fragte, ob ich dachte, wir bräuchten einen anderen Keyboarder, oder ob ich es alleine machen wollte. Ich sagte sofort: "Lass mich es alleine übernehmen."
Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte ich für Eric bloß Pads und einfache Unterstützung gespielt. Das alleine zumachen, gab mir die Gelegenheit etwas im Vordergrund zu sein. Ich glaube, ich war wie ein Springteufel. Wenn sich die Gelegenheit präsentierte, irgendwelche Solos zu spielen, war ich bestrebt, diese Chance zu nehmen
