An Experiment in Passivity -- Day 18 -- Duane "Skydog" Allman

in #music7 years ago
Eric Clapton was driving in his car in 1969 when Wilson Pickett's R&B cover of the Beatles Hey Jude came on the radio.

He was blown away by the killer guitar solo. He knew Pickett recorded on the Atlantic Label, so as soon as he got home he called New York to find out who it was. On a YouTube video he talked about the telephone call: “Who's that guitar player? And they said, ‘It’s a guy called Skydog Allman—Duane Allman,’ I just filed it away. To this day, I’ve never heard better rock guitar playing on an R&B record. It’s the best.”

Duane Allman was killed in a traffic accident when he was 24 years old.

His early recordings from the period 1966—1968 with the Allman Joys and the Hour Glass weren't particularly noteworthy. It was in 1969 as a session player in Muscle Shoals, Alabama that the unique talent of Duane Allman began to emerge. His recordings with Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Clarence Carter and others captured the attention of recording stars and influential music insiders. This resulted in a label putting its trust and resources behind him, and giving him the freedom to form the Allman Brothers Band.

In an age of preening and prancing rock musicians with super star egos, Duane Allman established a musical brotherhood where the first commandment was to serve the music. Stand and deliver—with a workmanlike attitude and street clothes—that was the band's calling card. With them he recorded two studio albums, and At Fillmore East, a legendary double live album produced by Tom Dowd.

Tragedy struck before the third studio album, Eat A Peach, was completed; as a result he only appears on three of its studio tracks. Fortunately there was a wealth of unused material from the live recordings at the Fillmore East, and Eat A Peach was released as a double album in order to include some of these treasures. These recordings, along with his collaborations with Eric Clapton represent a substantial share of a musical legacy he recorded in less than three years.

Allman Brothers Band "Mountain Jam"

Not only did the band he founded survive over four decades after his death, but his influence and playing continue to inspire musicians and fans around the world. In terms of technical proficiency he might not have been the equal of some others on this list, but he was an extraordinary soloist. He had a unique and emotive musical soul, great sound and tone, and a fluid sense of time that took the audience on a spellbinding journey to other realms. Musically he was on fire during the final year of his life, remarking that his hands were finally catching up with his mind. He was a left-handed guitarist who played right-handed and revolutionized the sound and role of slide guitar in modern music—an innovator and who left an indelible mark on the music world. Think back to the slide guitar prior to Duane Allman as you listen to this Mountain Jam solo.

PS When I asked Derek Trucks which rock musician he would like to see if he could go back in time, he answered Duane Allman. He thought it would be a life changing experience.

Thanks for the awesome music and for revealing Duane Allman to me. Its a pleasure to listen to his guitar sounds. <3

Thank you @tinski !

If you aren't familiar with him, you are in store for a wonderful time getting to know his music.

A really outstanding guitarist, that I didn't have very much on my radar yet. I also didn't know that he played the solo on "Hey Jude". Sadly he died so young... Thanks for sharing another gem with us and have a great day!

Glad I could alert you to Skydog, he really was a very special musician. The back story on the "Soul" version of "Hey Jude" was that Wilson Pickett was in Alabama to record, and they didn't have a song he liked. The Beatles had recently had a hit with "Hey Jude" and Skydog said let's cover that. Everybody laughed, but he wasn't kidding. So it was a spontaneous recording. It actually did well on radio -- and at that time it was unusual to have a R&B single with that kind of guitar on it -- much different that the Beatles original in just about every way.

BTW, your Black Seas drawing was really cool!

Thanks for the additional information @roused :-) Your knowledge on music history is really impressive! Some da you'll have to write books, or did you already?

I did write an eBook of fiction about music for Beatles fans. If you get bored this winter, I'll send you the link and you can read a short excerpt on Amazon ;-)

Very cool, I'd like to have a look for sure :-)

The crazy part was that the Fillmore East Live album was certified as a Gold record just before he died. It was in the following months that the band became truly famous.

If you get some time, put on your headphones and listen to the album: the song "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is my favorite.

in the dark. It is one of the truly great blues/rock albums of all time.

You really are a music lover, I am very please that you have even heard of them, not too many people in Europe have.

Musik begleitet mich schon mein ganzes Leben. Sie macht mich einfach happy :)

These experiments are simply life lessons for us! Thanks a lot!
