Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein from the Austin band S U R V I V E got together to record the amazing synth-heavy music for the Stranger Things television series. Volume One of the soundtrack won the Emmy for 'Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music' in September. On the heels of that win, the soundtrack for season two of the show has already been nominated for an Emmy. Winning this prestigious award speaks volumes to the quality of this release.
Being a soundtrack, there are no vocals on any of the tracks. I immediately thought of John Carpenter’s music and Vangelis’ Blade Runner. At times the songs seemed delicate and beautiful like a lullaby. Some of the songs are relaxing and calming, while others dive deep into the realm of being dark and haunting.
I’ve added these tracks to my “Get shit done” playlist at work alongside Tycho and M83.
Notice any...similarities?
Here is an Interesting article I found talking about all of the nods to Stephen King’s work, hidden like easter eggs throughout the show.: https://goo.gl/LyEfHZ

The second soundtrack release for Season 2 picks up right where Season 1 left off...in a scary dark place. This album seems to be a lot more moody, and generally less happy than the first album. The music at times can seem a bit ‘dreamy’, for a bit, only to slowly transform into something bordering on uncomfortable or even scary. They make great use of deep, rumbling bass in many of the tracks that add to the general dark feel of the album. I really liked the darker feel, as I do not think all music needs to be light and happy to make a strong emotional impact. Cover-to-cover, this is another strong Emmy award contender. It will be interesting to see how this release does in the contest.

I am highly anticipating both Season 3 of the show, and the next installment of songs from Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (AKA: S U R V I V E). I may even have to go back and re-watch both seasons before season 3 starts up. This series is great and I strongly advise checking it out if you have not seen it already.
