Playing through chord changes - 3 basic strategies.

in #music6 years ago

Hello Steemit!

So , here we have another lesson on improvisation , which is one of my favorites subjects of study. There is this quite ''off'' statement that improvising is just ''making music out of nothing'' and while that is partially true , we need some strategies and tools in order to be able to properly adjust and function over different musical situations.

The more tools we have in our ''improvisational toolbox'' the better we will perform over different ''problems'' that may arise when connecting harmonic changes.

Today I want to talk about three of them:

  • Common tones.
  • Rhythmic Repetition.
  • Contour and Melodic direction.

The correct application of these three core concepts are even more important than playing the ''right notes'' as they will give meaning to your musical sentences.

I'm not gonna lie :) Watched just 2 minutes of the video as I'm not really a musician. But I'm wondering about 2 things - why don't you reupload it on DTube? And also, you call it a lesson. Is it a part of some course you're working on? If so, pleased to meet another dreamer and possible future teacher haha :D im an IT guy but hope to open a school for kids in the future :D

My only musical experience dates back to 2o14 where we used to sing one song all over again with other interns in Pakistan :D

Hey @matkodurko! thanks for stopping by and your feedback ! .. well .. on the Dtube thing it basically comes down that it never uploads for me.. and then I can't watch the videos at all.. so it comes down to practicality , also the fact that it gets taken down after a period of time makes the blog more difficult to compile.. since I use my lessons here to send to students outside the blockchain.. I can just address them to a particular lesson and if the video is lost.. it becomes messy , that is basically it.

and hey! big props on your school project! I work with kids myself and it is very rewarding .. plus i'm a big supporter of musical education in children ! happy to hear that you are venturing there. Cheers!

Yepp true that that it gets taken down. And thanks man :)

Thanks for sharing man! You have great musical talent. Improvisation and that "jam" style is a lot of fun to listen to. It's one of the thing I definitely wish I had learned to do.

Have you ever heard of a band named Rx Bandits? They're my all time favorite. It's more of a punk/ska/experimental band but they're the best to watch jam. I've seen em live more than 10 times and they always amaze me. They record all their albums live in the studio too. Check em out if you get a chance.

Thanks for sharing and jam on!
