“She’s Lost Control,” covered by Grace Jones … (Post-Punk / Dub – Music to Your Ears, Covers–51)

Grace Jones – “She’s Lost Control”

“She’s Lost Control” (1980 – original from 1979)

Only 1 year after Joy Division released their dark recording of this song, Grace Jones reworked it and made it even more disturbing.

Out of Control and Off the Rails

Whereas the original features Ian Curtis singing “She’s lost control,”  Jones’ version shifts to the first-person perspective.

Over and over again, Jones repeats “I’ve lost control,”  in an increasingly frantic voice, as if she herself  is the one who is deranged and slipping inexorably off the rails.

Throw in some maniacal laughter, some screeching tires, and some panicked screaming by Jones, and you’re left with a version which is even more harrowing and haunting than the original.   (Image source)

Grace Jones

Grace Jones is a US–Jamaican model, musician, and actress. She was born in Jamaica, but moved to the US with her family at the age of 13.

Dabbling to Disillusion

After working as a model in New York and Paris, Jones began her recording career in 1977. At first, she dabbled in disco, but she soon grew disillusioned with the shallowness of the genre.

She then shifted to the loosely defined genre new wave, which incorporated a wide range of sounds, including post-punk, funk, and reggae.

Love and Leather

By 1981, Jones had created unique cover versions of such top hits and underground hits as Roxy Music’s “Love is the Drug,”  The Normal’s “Warm Leatherette,”  and Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing.”

In 1999, VH1 ranked Jones at Number 82 on its list of the “100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll.”    (Image source)

Confusion in her eyes that says it all
She's lost control
And she's clinging to the nearest passer by
She's lost control
And she gave away the secrets of her past
And said I've lost control again
And a voice that told her when and where to act
She said, I've lost control again

And she turned around and stabbed me in the hand
And said, I've lost control again
And how I'll never know just why or understand
She said, I've lost control again
And she screamed out, kicking on her side
And said, I've lost control again
And writhed upon the floor, I thought she'd die
She said, I've lost control
She's lost control again
She's lost control
She's lost control again
She's lost control

Well, I had to pause for breath to state my case
And say, she's lost control again
And she showed up all the errors and mistakes
And said, I've lost control again
But she expressed herself in many different ways
Until she lost control again
And walked upon the edge of no escape
And laughed I've lost control
She's lost control again
She's lost control
She's lost control again
She's lost control

This is sad :(

Yep. The original was sad and moving, and this cover makes it even more so.
