Friday Vibes — Jamaican Reggae: Music Recommendations!

in #music8 years ago (edited)

Growing up in the Caribbean means that you are well acquainted with reggae music from Jamaica.

The roots of Reggae come from traditional mento folk music, which influenced ska and rocksteady in Jamaica in the 1950s, eventually becoming Reggae in the 1960s.

Reggae has come a long way since Toots and Maytals released the first popular song mentioning 'reggae' in 1968

In no particular order, here are some of my personal favourite Jamaican reggae artistes and tracks.
Some are old, some are new. It's definitely not meant to be a conclusive list!!

I am a 'conscious man' meaning I prefer reggae that isn't just about dance and girls and badman culture. 'Conscious' music.

Hope you enjoy these islands vibes on a Friday!

You cannot have a reggae list without Bob Marley.

Live is best. The King of Reggae music. If I could bring one musician back, it would be Bob.

Don't forget your history;
Know your destiny:
In the abundance of water,
The fool is thirsty.
Rat race, rat race, rat race!

Adapted from a speech by Emperor Haile Selassie.

That until there no longer
First class and second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes -
Me say war.

And a couple of the Marley boys.

Very cool. It will take me a bit of time to go through those.

Good morning and thank you for this collection of songs. I will certainly play them to get some good vibes.

The other day I was watching the Bob Marley documentary on the TV. He was an interesting man, very interesting.
