A Warrior's Love Song

The story is about two lovers. Hinemoa, beautiful girl that every man wants to marry. Tutanekai, a man with good standing but not high enough for the likes of Hinemoa. Although, Hinemoa doesn't give a rat's ass about standings and she have been eyeing him during rare tribal meetings. He caught a glimpse of her and he could not look away.
The both knew how the felt but were to scared to tell each other. Hinemoa being more of a boss, she told her servant to tell Tutanekai, that she wants his babies. Who would refuse an offer like that, especially from the most beautiful girl in the islands.
The elders were opposed to this but there's no stopping our boss lady, Hinemoa. Separated by a great lake, they made the decision for her to canoe her way to his village in the cover of darkness. Tutanekai is to guide her in the darkness using the sound of his flute.
Every night he plays his flute waiting for Hinemoa. Her village have actually learnt of their plans and had pulled all the canoes high up on the shore so that she wont be able to use it. She was saddened but she was determined to see Tutanekai and decided to swim for it. She attached gourds around her for buoyancy and swum for it.
In the cold, freezing, dark lake, she was guided by the sound of Tutanekai's flute. After long, exhausting swim, she reached his village. They found each other and became man and wife.
This story dates back long ago and is still told by their descendants that are still living in Rotorua to this day.
I thought this is a "Romeo and Juliet Story" for the Kiwis... but it is better they had a happy ending.
But then again it might be same story as "Troy". The village learned where she done and went to so her tribe went and attack that mans tribe...
