#musicdiscovery - supergroups

in #music6 years ago

Hello Steemians,

Firstly, just a reminder if you want to go in the draw to win 2SBD, all you have do is visit this post and give me your 90s music suggestions.

Today I thought I have a look at a few of the influential ‘supergroups’ over the years. Before we get into its lets get a definition of supergroups - Wikipedia define a supergroup as:

‘A music group whose members have successful solo careers or are part of other groups or well known in other musical profession’.

Sometimes these are formed as ‘side projects’ while bands are on hiatus, but sometimes they turn into fully fledged projects that run for years.

The Travelling Wilburys

Possibly one of the supergroups with the combination of the most successful singers and songwriters is The Travelling Wilburys. The Travelling Wilburys consist of and impressive lineup:

Bob Dylan - one of the most successful solo artists of all time
George Harrison - former member of British legend The Beatles
Jeff Lynne - Co founder of The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)
Roy Orbison - successful Rock n Roll singer from the 60s
Tom Petty - Lead singer of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

With the range and talent of their members The Travelling Wilburys have a unique sound that mixes rock, blues, folk and rock n roll. They released 2 albums in the late 1980s - Roy Orbison died in 1988, before their second album was released. Here's the song ‘Handle with care’ from their first album The Traveling Wilburys Vol.1

Temple of the Dog

In terms of supergroups, when it comes to 90s music it doesn't come much bigger than Temple of the Dog:

Chris Cornell from Soundgarden
Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam

Along with these two absolute legends of grunge and 90s rock, Temple of the Dog also featured Jeff Ament on Bass (from Pearl Jam) and Stone Gossard on guitar (also from Pearl Jam). They only released on self titled album in 1991, but it is brilliant - Chris Cornell on lead vocals (what a voice!) with backing offered by Eddie Vedder. Probably the most well know songs is Hunger Strike:

Highly recommend this album if you are at all into 90s punk/rock/grunge music such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots.

Velvet Revolver

Velvet Revolver consist of former/present Guns n Roses members Slash, Duff Mckagan and Matt Sorum, along with Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland. This is probably my favorite super group (I am a massive STP fan!), and the combination of Scott and the GNR sound is amazing. The song Fall to Pieces is one of my favorite songs of the 2000s, it's like a remake and updated version of Sweet Child of Mine:

Velvet Revolver - Fall to Pieces

Unfortunately due to fighting and disagreements between band members (along with Scotts ever increasing drug use) they only released two albums. Although the second album Libertad wasn't as commercially successful it still had the familiar heavy rock sound. According to the Wikipedia page, this one of only 3 albums that Scott Weiland recorded while sober! Here's one of the singles from the album, ‘Get out the door’:

Velvet Revolver - Get out the Door

Audioslave

Audioslave feature Chris Cornell from Soundgarden (such a legend he made this list twice!) on vocals, and Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello (guitar) and Brad Wilk (drums). Audioslave have a similar funk/metal type sound of Rage Against the Machine, but Chris Cornell's vocals move the sound more towards conventional rock/grunge and away from the rap type sound of Rage Against the Machine.

Audioslave recorded 3 albums - ‘Audioslave’, ‘Out of Exile’ and ‘Revelations’ before disbanding in 2007. The lead single Cochise from the self titled album really highlights Chris Cornells local ability, along with the familiar guitar sounds of Tom Morello:

My favorite album was the latest release Revelations, here is the awesome song ‘Original Fire’

Chickenfoot

Chickenfoot are a rock supergroup featuring Sammy Hagar on vocals (formerly of Van Halen), bassist Michael Anthony (formerly of Van Halen), guitar legend Joe Satriani and Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers on drums. The combination of Satrianas blues guitar lick with the 80s sound of Hagar combine to give an awesome sound mixture of blues, rock and metal. Chickenfoot have released two albums with Chickenfoot III being released in 2011, and at this stage there have been no announcements of any further recordings. Here's one of my favorite tunes ‘Soap on a rope’ from their debut album:

Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures is one of the newer (and more exciting) supergroups - such a brilliant mix of musicians! They feature Josh Homme (from Queens of the Stone Age) on vocals and lead guitar, John Paul Jones (from Led Zeppelin) on bass guitar and Dave Grohl (from The Foo Fighters) on drums and backing vocals). In terms of ROCK I think these guys take the cake of the best supergroup. They have only released one self titled album in 2009 - there has been several talks of further recordings but nothing has been set in stone. Here is the song ‘Red Fang’

Thanks for reading and i'd be interested to hear your thoughts and if you have any other supergroup suggestions you listen to.
