First Song

If you’ve never heard of Dave Dudley, I won’t be surprised or upset. His is a name that I imagine has been forgotten in many circles, but he had a great voice and a number of great songs.
If you’re not familiar with country music, let this post be something of an introduction to you.
If this doesn’t sound like country music to you, what can I say, the genre has gone astray.

Second Song

If you’ve never heard of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, well, it’s your loss.
Of course, I can’t guarantee that you’ll like them, but I have a feeling that if you’ve got a bit of wild side to you, or a melancholic one, their music will just grow and grow on you.
And if it doesn’t, well, that might actually mean that you’re better off;)

Third Song

Many of you might recognize this song from that movie about the fictional folk singer who tried his luck traveling from New York City to Chicago but was too dark and cantankerous to catch a break. If it sounds different, though, that’s because this isn’t Justin Timberlake’s version.
The voices these guys and girls had.
If this song doesn’t do anything for you, I understand. But if you feel it, I know you feel it deeply. That’s the way this music is.

Awesome post! Full upvote for real country music!!

First if you ever saw "Christmas with the Kranks" Dan Aykroyd does a great version of "Six Days on the Road" playing an accordion lol.

OMG I love old Bobby Bare. I saw him in a concert back in the 80's at a casino. Here is one of my fave Bobby Bare songs, the classic Marie Laveau!!! Pretty funny!!!

Great post!

Yeah, he had a great voice. I could be wrong, but I don’t feel like many singers these days have those deep, velvety voices that a lot of old country singers had.

I swear I’ve seen that movie “Christmas with the Kranks”, but I don’t remember Dan Ankroyd singing 6 Days on the Road. I’m going to have to drop by YouTube and look for that.

Thanks!!!

It’s the first time I hear of Dave Dudley and Commander Cody(yeah it’s my loss ;p, just put them onto my playlist), but I looove all these 3 songs. Thanks for sharing! ❤️ country & folk music 🎶

I’ve got a soft spot for a lot of old country and rock a billy songs. Something about them really makes me think of the American emotional experience that seems to have underscored a lot of the ideas and trends, etc from when I was growing up in the eighties.

Of course, other kinds of music was much more popular at that time and after, but there’s just something about these old country songs that really captures the essence of the American experience for me.

I’m glad you like them.

I was born in the latter half of the eighties while I didn't have the American experience you had then. But I've always loved old country songs and folk/world music from different countries. I guess I understand what you said - music could always bring back so many memories and evoke special feelings. It's like magic.

Folk music says a lot about a place, its people, and their culture. With all of your travels and experiences, I’m sure you’ve seen and heard a lot of different music. Do you have any videos of street musicians to share?

Yeah I have some videos that I should share! Till now I only shared some photos, like The Soul Mate and
The Carribean Melody.

If you get a chance, share some videos too.

Great finds! Was this from your trip to Tokyo recently??

I wonder if it is hard for non-Americans to relate to this kind of music. It is so Americana. There is nothing like hitting the road to go see what there is to see, both outside and inside.

Oh, and I'm sure you remember the Descendents. After Milo left they reformed as "ALL". My friends and I caught one of their shows at UCSD. Milo showed up and banged out some classics and they played Hot Rod Lincoln. Anyway, here is All's version of Hot Rod Lincoln.

It was more of a trip in and out of and around Tokyo, but yeah, these are just some clicks that I took from the driver’s seat while driving. This time around, I found that the highways in Tokyo really reminded me of the scenery in Rad Racer. It kind of flipped me out.

Yeah, I wondered if people in Japan or elsewhere would get it as well. I thought about trying to explain the depth of the cultural meaning that the road has in America, but time got the best of me and I ended up trying to let the music do that instead. There’s something about these country songs from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s that really just capture what now seems to be a hidden and forgotten part of being American. It’s like the power crystal inside of us that we have forgotten is even there anymore.

Maybe that’s weird. It’s hard to describe. 🤪

The Descendants. That must have been fun. I haven’t listened to or heard mention of them in years. And, actually, this is the first I’ve heard of All. I’m surprised.

I used to live one town over from Commander Cody and used to be able to see the original guitarist and few of their friends play shows a couple times of year. Really un-fucking-believably good musicians! They blew my mind every time. I thought about posting a couple other songs by them, but opted for Hot Rod Lincoln because of my Rad Racer recollections^_^

I'm really glad you picked Hot Rod Lincoln. Great tune. Had no idea Commander Cody was the original artist.

Ya, there are a lot of amazing musicians that don't get the spotlight, especially now with over produced, pop BS. Your'e lucky to have seen them.

Actually, this is the original:

Commander Cody’s version seems to be the one that gets covered more (the riff of the original is slightly different from Commander Cody’s).

Yeah, Bill Kirchen is a hell of a guitarist and really good storyteller/showman.

Ok, this makes more sense to me. Part of the lyric, "Left San Pedro late one night & Headed up Grapevine Hill" made me think that the writer had to be from California.

While this version is "authentic" I prefer the Commander Cody version.
Maybe it's time for an EDM version!

Thanks again!

Can you make that happen?

If Wikipedia can be considered a trustworthy source, Hot Rod Lincoln was written in response to a song called Hot Rod Race, which is set in San Pedro.

Your journey seems so amazing also loved the clicks too.
Thanks for putting this up sir

Commander Cody! Wow, cool... there's a name I hadn't heard since I moved west from Texas in 2006; he used to get some air time on a few stations down there.

Actually do know a bit of Dave Dudley — again the Texas connection, and then only because one of the DJs on a local album rock station would have "Rig Rock hour" once a week... Texas being a big place, music for truckers was an important part of the radio landscape.

Thanks for the little walk down memory lane!

I could use an hour a week of Rig Rock. That sounds like a lot of fun! I can imagine there would be a lot of that in Texas. And once again, your comment affirms the feeling I have that you have lived everywhere;)

I really liked your “Quality” vs “Value” post, by the way. I meant to comment there and got swept away in something else. The question of whether someone finds value in what you post is a big one. I think it could be said that, in many ways, a post’s value really determines its quality. This sentiment sort of reminds me of a situation Robert Kiyosaki described when being interviewed by who he felt was a really great writer, a journalist couldn’t get her novels and stories published. In his version, he chalked the difference between himself and the author up to sales experience. He became a best selling author, not a best writing author, because of his business and marketing knowledge. You could also say that, possibly, his books provide a greater value to more people than his interviewee’s books and articles.

Not too familiar with the first two although the first sounds familiar, but I actually learnt the third one and memorised all the lyrics! Haven't heard it in ages though... What a trip down memory lane! Thank you!! :)

That’s wild. What are the chances. I used to have loads of this music on records, but they didn’t make it to Japan with me.

I’m glad to have brought back some memories.

Hahaha... I have much older sisters - we have a box of records too (LPs mostly, a few EPs) that we don't play any more but I think I know each and every one of the songs in them; and the lyrics... They used to print the lyrics on the back of the covers and I used to follow lyrics to song when they were played... lol... Kid nerd! :D

You should take them out and play them. You could take a video of the record and post it to Dtube. I’d love to hear what you’ve got.
