"What if the worst day in the life of these people was the best business day in the lives of others?"

Ana Leal - Reporter

"We had to stay there and we thought we were dying there.
No one showed up."

Five days ago I woke up with a bad insight. My worst fears are happening. A giant uncontrollable fire is devouring everything around, fed by eucalyptus trees, through dry, hot weather and random angry winds. Many have lost everything, others have been injured. Animals roam scared. Others are consumed by the fire. It's a real Dantesque hell. My heart is tighter than ever. Virtually all communications with Monchique are cut off, there is no fixed telephone, and most mobile networks do not work. I know nothing about my friends that live there. The roads are cut, no one enters no one gets out. A part of us dies with the fire. The fire advances towards my town. Five days ago I woke up with a bad insight, today I woke up with a terrible smell of the burnt forest, and the sound of trees being cut. The intensity and change of direction of the wind is making it difficult to fight the fire. People can not help in the firefight because the police will not allow it. There was this lady saying in the news that the police evacuated her and her family, but her husband and son managed to come back and saved the house, otherwise, it would burn.

The fire in Monchique, Faro district, broke out last Friday, has already provoked at least 29 injuries and forced the evacuation of several population clusters and a hotel unit.

The population is revolted because everything indicates that there is a total disorganization. There are no sufficient means of combat the fire, forestry producers in the Western Algarve say they have been waiting months for the Nature Conservation Institute's approval of a fire prevention and control plan that covers the area where the flames started in Monchique.

"It's all wrapped up in the bureaucracy, they only ask us questions about caprine wool and nothing progresses," said the association's president representing some 500 forestry producers in the Algarve's Barlavento.
"It's a stupid and endless bureaucratic process. They seem to do it on purpose not to advance."

The Secretary of State for Civil Protection does not respond to criticism from the Association of Professional Firefighters and Producers of the Eastern Algarve. Artur Neves reiterates that the priority is to fight the flames and protect people and calls for collaboration with the authorities.
All the news that has been in the news is populated by lies and expectation. The locals say that there is a great deal of disorganization and that no one can reach a consensus on how to act. The so-called "theater of operations" is literally a theater. Meanwhile, the government continues to allow private companies to continue to reforest Portugal with eucalyptus trees... The forest is much more than wood!

A forest is the home of many animals...we need to take xare of it as we do to others..pretty bad to see such picture due to wild fire...

Hi there. I came across your post through @headchange who featured it here: Pay it forward curation contest.

I am sorry to see that disaster like hell. Much more to know that there are some families being affected.

During my teenage days, I have seen wildfire fully eat our hut in the farm and turn it into ashes right before my eyes. My mother and I were there but we can not do anything with the giant torch that is approaching so fast. It even reached the coconut tree that seem 2-storey high and I thought it will fall on us. The reason of wild fire? Some b@$***** are too lazy to manually clean their lands from wild grasses that they just set it on fire. They did not care about the possible effect when they are not able to control the fire they caused. What is more frustrating? There is no action item from our government officials even when the whole forest is gone. With this I can somehow relate to your situation and frustration.

I can only hope that your government do something to combat this problem very quickly. I saw @headchange's comment on your other blog that she will share this problem further and also report about IRA. I ride on to hope that will lead to immediate cease of wildfire in your place.

I hope you are okay. Keep safe!

This is just heartbreaking and so frustrating, all mixed up together! I'm so sorry for you and everyone involved, people and animals alike. Stay safe!

I found your post because @headchange featured you in our Pay it Forward Curation contest.

oohh I almost couldn't finished to read this post, my heart is broken and I feel so mad about the government reaction to this disaster. poor animals, how can they abandon the God creatures like that? trees, animals, human.. all of us are God Creatures and we supposed to protect each other for the balance of life. thank you @arcanu for sharing this story... hope that immediate response will put on the priority list to prevent the same disaster in the future.
