Movies | What happened to the Justice League? Part 1

in #movies6 years ago

Have you ever wondered why the Justice League movie wasn't so successful despite having so much potential? Here we will delve into one of the factors that could have contributed to this.

In the 2000s we witnessed a resurgence in the superheroes genre with sagas as X-men and the trilogy of Spider-man starring Tobey Maguire (considered the true spider-man by many of that generation but also known now as the weeping spider-man hahaha). The revolution initiated by these franchises was followed by many attempts to exploit the comic book characters, many of them unsuccessful. But one thing we can be sure of is that the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) that started in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie has obtained satisfactory results.

Among its achievements is the fact of launching a successful cinematographic universe worthy of the envy of other studios. And why am I talking about Marvel if this post is about the DC's Justice League? Well, precisely because the MCU as far as I know was the first project that could gather on the big screen different characters from the comics under the same universe. In the past we had feature films of superheroes that despite being related in the pages of the comic books never shared screen in cinema.

For example, we never saw an interaction between Batman and Superman in part because the films of these characters were developed in different times, but mainly because there was never a vision to connect them from studios or due to copyright issues. For a long time superheroes were taken to the big screen in isolation, ignoring the wide connectivity they had on paper or other media such as animation.

This is where Marvel comes with its MCU because although DC tried to make a Justice League film a few years ago called Justice League Mortal (google it) this project was abandoned, and it was Marvel who finally showed confidence in its characters and the potential in connecting them, and decided to build a cinematic universe where they could coexist (at least those that were legally available). A movie like Justice League wouldn't have been possible if the MCU hadn't been successful. The problem with the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), as it's commonly known, is that the construction of its own cinematic universe has been rushed, probably with the intention of catching up with the competition.

Man of Steel (2013), the first installment of this universe, although it isn't universally acclaimed works as an independent film without any direct connectivity beyond a satellite of Wayne enterprises (easter egg for the audience), probably because at that time there wasn't a clear plan to connect him later with other heroes. In my opinion that was something positive because it was necessary to build the characters in solitary just like Marvel did when the MCU started with Iron Man and then step by step the others were introduced in their own movies.

A sequel to Man of Steel had to be done and on the way standalone features of Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, etc. But what was originally the pre-production of Man of Steel 2, transformed into Batman v Superman (2016), a film in which we saw for the first time Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman together on the big screen. Superman was put on the back seat of what was initially his sequel, and with him further development of his character.

Batman (played by Ben Affleck) is presented here as a veteran with 20 years of experience as a masked vigilante and without previously having his own movie so that the audience would know more about this new version of the hero and the background of his behavior. In the same way Wonder Woman was presented although to a lesser extent. It's clear that DC wanted to accelerate their universe just in the second film, moving on with a not very memorable Suicide Squad (2016) that I almost forgot to include here because I didn't remember it and a successful solo release of Wonder Woman (2017) before jumping to the awaited Justice League (2017).

In the latter, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg were added, and also suffered a bit because they didn't have previous development that would allow us to know them better. Justice League should have been an event similar to what the premiere of the Avengers back in 2012 was, but unfortunately it wasn't like that. As a fan of both Marvel and DC I've always wanted this franchise to perform well and my criticisms shouldn't be taken as if I were a Marvel fanboy, in fact I really like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Wonder Woman, but I can see the flaws the DCEU have. Undoubtedly the production of Justice League had many other problems but surely the rushed building of this cinematographic universe was a determining factor.
