Capsule Film Review: Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
In 2014 real life and Hollywood fiction intersected when the premiere of horror film Deliver Us from Evil coincided with Islamic State's takeover of Hatra, archaeological site in Iraq made famous for appearing in opening scenes of William Friedkin's Exorcist. 2014 film by Scott Derrickson has film that opens at the same site with three US Army soldiers in 2010 coming there and arousing powerful demons. Few years later NYPD detective Ralph Sarchie (played by Eric Bana) must deal with the series of related macabre events and, in doing so, receives help from Catholic priest Father Mendoza (played by Edgar Ramirez). Based on the alleged real events, Deliver Us from Evil looks somewhat more refreshing compared with similar films mainly due to somewhat "saucier" language and more explicit violence due to R-rating, as well as Ramirez portraying rather "hip" priest who drinks, smokes and doesn't hide being attracted to women. Those elements, however, aren't enough to compensate for the annoying cliches that become apparent towards the end of the film.
