Jen’s Movie Review #20 — Justice League (2017)

It has been years since I watched the last movie (bluff!). I have been busy with pre-moving house that I really miss my trip to the cinema. This is the movie that has been on everyone’s radar to the extent my company booked one cinema hall to cater for all employees—but I did not take part because I have to wait another 3 days LOL. So this is a review of Justice League according to me.

Review

The life after Superman’s death

Bruce Wayne a.k.a The Batman was in charge of putting the team together to fight evil power— who is trying to take over the world—something that’s a cliche in the world of comic. The story started quite slow as Bruce recruiting the member of Justice League that took quite a time in building this film. This movie is based on Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice where Batman causing the death of Superman. If everyone's remembers, we could have the same feeling of how that movie went. Disaster. Credit to this Justice League though, it has been done towards redemption of Batman Vs Superman blunders which has been better in terms of execution and storytelling.

Saved by the charisma of the actors but how about chemistry?

Gal Gadot and the young Flash Ezra Miller keeps the movie entertaining and watchable at the same time. Thanks to them, this movie is more fun with both characters doing great bringing sparkle until the end. However, the chemistry between these superheroes are visually lacking. The only chemistry we can witness is the between Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince a.k.a Wonder Woman while others seems a bit far off particularly the Cyborg a.k.a Victor Stone with everybody else. The fightings tried to incorporate team efforts but it just not enough to create chemistry rather than the showing of individual strengh.

Bring your DC guide book

Education is taken for granted towards educating the audience. Without existing knowledge about DC Comic book, one can be having a lot of questions while watching. Questions such as: What is Darkseid? What really is Motherbox? What was the last occasion the Amazon people use the emergency light thingy?

All of which that could easily be answered by die-hard DC Comic fan.

It is hard not to compare with Marvel's Avengers
While we were being fed of Marvel's franchise, it is hard not to compare the two when both trying to produce a team of Superheroes. This movie is no doubt came in behind after the release of Thor: Ragnarok that blows the mind of moviegoer like me. It is the fun in the cinema that people want and Marvel did deliver through it franchise. In comparison, Marvel's Avengers have phenomenal chemistry with each character as a result of cameo in each individual film such as The Hulk cameo in Thor: Ragnarok, Iron man in Spiderman Homecoming and etc that were given much time to expand the whole story.

Non Movie Review—Outrage of Wonder Woman’s Costume Took Over The Net

Before the release of this movie, Twitter peeps were in the battle mode over Wonder Woman’s outfits. The rage was sparked over how the Amazon’s women outfits were depicted under female and male Directors (in comparison of Wonder Woman Movie directed by Patty Jenkins and Justice League directed by Zack Snyder). The debate of which pointed at Zack Snyder’s purposely portray Women of Amazon outfits to be much ‘skimpier’ than the ones directed by Jenkins. For me, I understand what’s the fuss is all about but I let the debate of ‘different taste and style’ to win this particularly as I saw those Amazon’s women abs worth showing.

Non Movie Review— Change in Director
The original director Zack Snyder has been excused following the tragic death of his daughter and Avengers Director Joss Whedon took over the movie with allegedly making 'significant reshoots' and rewrites to make the movie "feels cohesive". It is unclear so far how far the reshoots have been done and being speculated in the industry.

Last word
For me, the movie is definitely better than Batman Vs Superman but far to reach the level of Marvel does. While it is great to see Marvel got a competition, I think Warner Bros recreating DC Comic business need to step up in storytelling like the Wonder Woman's movie early this year. While they are definitely worthy moments in the movie, it lacks 'wow' factor compared to the supply of movies we had lately— or maybe the benchmark has been set too high.
