Compared to the age of the earth, the age of mountains or mountain ranges actually tends to be relatively much younger. According to the American Museum of Natural History, mountains and mountain ranges have actually been formed and destroyed many times since the earth was formed. Mountains or mountains are formed through a long process. The Himalayas were formed from one of the major collisions that began around millions of years ago. Some even took up to millions of years before finally forming the mountains as we know them today. In general, mountains or mountain ranges are formed when layers of the earth's crust or plates collide with each other on a large scale and generally over a long period of time.

Volcanic Mountains Volcanic mountains are formed in areas where there is volcanic activity. This process occurs because magma or liquid rock is lighter than the solid rock around it. Therefore, the earth's crust will tend to rise to the surface. Magma will gush out of the ground and create lava flows, which cool and harden in the open air. Folded Mountains Folded mountains are created in areas where tectonic plates meet, known as convergent plate boundaries. The plates push each other in such a way that the earth's crust bends, folds, or curves. This process can create large mountains or sharp ridges, but usually occurs over thousands or even millions of years. These mountains are created when blocks of the Earth's crust are pushed upward, in a relatively straight motion.
