Travels With Connie #32 Leadville Colorado
Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.
More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.
Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.
Connie in Leadville
According to Wikipedia Leadville is the highest incorporated town in the US at 10,152 feet (3094 M). The town is surrounded by truly giant mountains on the Eastern Slope of the Rockie Mountains. A nearby lake is the headwaters for the Arkansas River which ends up in the Mississippi. A long ways away.
Leadville City Hall
Leadville started as a Gold and Silver mining town in 1877 (an earlier settlement failed). Over the course of it's run many notable people spent time there.
After the gunfight at the OK Corral Doc Holiday moved to Leadville where he shot a deputy but was ruled not guilty of any crime by a jury. Luke Short, a gunfighter and poker player also spent time in Leadville.
Poker Alice, a famous poker player on the frontier got her start in Leadville after her husband was killed in a mining accident.
Heritage Museum
Texas Jack Omohundro, a stage actor with Buffalo Bill Cody died in Leadville of pnuemonia.
Margret Brown moved to Leadville at age 18 and married a mining engineer in 1886. They became wealthy after finding a seam of Gold at an operating mine. You would probably know her as 'Molly'. The Unsinkable Molly Brown who survived the Titanic was from Leadville.
Oscar Wilde played the Opera House in Leadville.
