Is Monster Hunter World THAT great?

in #monsterhunterworld7 years ago (edited)

Before starting, I just want to mention that this is my first post, and i'm still not very familiar how exactly this works, so forgive my lack of knowledge and mistakes.

Ok, so before I say anything I just want to say that I am a veteran of the saga. I've been playing Monster Hunter since the Freedom series for the PSP since 2007/2008. And as much as I love the games, I have to say this Monster Hunter had me excited up to where I saw how the "farm" worked. Also this is only focused on the farm part, the combat, graphics etc are not consider it in this post.

Farm on Freedom saga and 3rd Portable

Since the first Monster Hunter game, the hunter (you), had access to a farm, where you were able to recollect every type of resources excluding the monsters parts:

  • Fish
  • Mushrooms
  • Minerals
  • Herbs
  • Honey
  • Insects
And the Trenya cat Exclusive for the Monster Hunter Freedom Unite game

(I won't talk about the Dark Pieces, how to upgrade the farm and the Trenya cat since it is irrelevant for this post)

This version is the fully upgraded, meaning you don't get this once you begin the game.

When you first start playing you have a small farm, but you'll get enough resources for what you need, and each time you complete a certain mission of either the "campaign" or the guild room you'll, be able to upgrade it with points.

As you can see, it is pretty damn big, and that's what it makes it great. You are able to get so many resources after each mission, in which it will help you to create weapons and armor, upgrade them, create items and craft ammunition. There are few times where you need to go on a mission to gather certain materials, but they are rare since you'll most likely get the materials (farm), when you are done gathering the materials from the monster.

Farm on Ultimate saga and forward

Lazy.
Just, lazy.
There is no other word to describe it. Some people might say is simple, but the previous farm system was already simple, just because it took some minutes to do it, it did not mean that it was complex.

This system is not only lazy, but it forces you to do missions to farm the materials you need and to gain points for the farm, because this system is not cheap at all.

At the end of the day, you're going to spend as much time gathering materials and points as hunting monsters... and I don't know about you, but this game is called MONSTER HUNTER FOR A GODDAMN REASON!!

This is all I have to say for now, if you want me to go more in depth as to why this is worse I'll make another post.

Thank you for reading this, I hope you like it and if you have some feedback as to make better posts i'll be more than happy to read them :)

I do see your point. But didn't they have something similar in mh4u? Talk to farm guy tell him what you want to harvest. And then do missions?

I think monster Hunter online was like what you said. There was your own area in game. It's basically your room but with all the farming spots for honey, mining, fishing, herbs, bugs, etc.

I'm not too bothered about the current system on MHW yet. Cause I don't have alot of time to play everyday. But I guess my opinion might change as I go on. And find that it's irritating to sustain my points

It's been a while since I played MH4U, so I don't remember exactly what you are talking about. And i never played MH Online so no idea neither. Though the 3U had it's own map where you can spend infinite time in it gathering, hunting, cooking, etc. Which I really liked and it compensate for the lack of farm.

I do remember getting really frustrated at some point on 3U and 4U (specially 4U), where I had to go and gather some bugs and minerals, worse part is that the places that spawn those things are random, there is no specific place where you know it will always be there. It was annoying and frustrating.

I hope they fixed this issue here, but until I can confirm it's gone I won't buy it.

I just opened my 3DS to double check to make sure my facts are right.
In MH4U they have the Wycoon/Wyporium where you can spend your points to acquire items by multiplying the items you want. (up to 3 carts/slots)
Here's a screenshot found online.

Now in Monster Hunter Online. (chinese game, i had to do like a 20 step thing just to play it)
There was an entrance to your 'room' on the edge of town where you can have your palicos, armor, storage box, and farm area to harvest things. The problem is you cant harvest infinitely in here. its limited per day (MHO was a chinese game that had micro transactions)

This is the closest image i could find on google.

But I do understand where you're coming from, I had to go to the same map and quitting it over and over until i found the item i wanted. Shove that into the Wyporium and multiply it to get enough materials for what i wanted.
But the key i think is that if you get 1 of the item you want you can produce it indefinitely even if it takes you doing a few missions to get it.

I have the game ill let you know how i think about the farming system. if it's worse or not for sure.

Is really frustrating. Just wish they could make the farm like old gen.

Thanks, I appreciate the comments, and please, let me know how is it in MHW. I hope is not as bad as the Ultimate saga.

Alright so I spent about 2-3 hours playing last night.
I've been soloing the story getting my HR up just hit 6 last night.

So far i have no idea where items are - i.e. honey, bugs, ores. I know they're in the same exact spot everytime but the map is pretty damn massive in MHW. I also think the map that you carry with you shows where they are, but it's really small and requires you to zoom in to get a good view.(i'm way too lazy for that)
There's also the fact that there are multiple levels in MHW so there's a butt load of areas to explore. Which is awesome. but when you're looking for materials it might be a hassle unless you know exactly where to go.

Some of the bounties i've picked up so far are

  • gather X honey
  • gather X bugs
  • gather X plants
  • mine X times at a mining spot
  • gather X times at bones

these usually take a few missions for me to clear especially honey and bugs.
reward : 40 ~ 60 caravan/research points and 1 armor sphere

plants and mining ones are usually the fastest, bones are fast too if you remember where to find them.

lastly the farming system is just like MH4U, I picked honey shoved it at the researcher. and he gets me 2 honey for every mission i complete.

It takes time to memorize the places, but at least is on the same place! Which is great because one won't have to spend too much time looking for it, once you know where it is. And honestly that was the only concern i had about the game, gathering materials.

Thank you so much for helping me, I appreciate it a lot :D

If you want to play together (i'll get it for the Xbox One) i'll be more than happy to help you :)

So i played for a few more hours today, I'll let you know my findings before i go to bed.

In MHW the map shows where all the gathering spots are and you can set a waypoint so theirs a trail leading you straight to it. ( pretty convenient)

Second, the gathering spots will regenerate after a while compared to older games where you can only farm it once and have to end the mission to start a new one. I needed 8 specific ores today for upgrading my hammer and making a palico armor set for my cat.

I found on the map there was 2 mining spots in 1 area, the passage to the next area has 1 more then 3 more spots in the next area. total of 6 mining locations that i just kept making circles around the map to farm. It took me 2 laps to get all the ores i needed.

So far the farming isnt bad yet. but granted i'm still low HR. I just got to HR8 tonight. I got another mission that if i clear it i'll unlock more of the researcher for more materials to multiply. I'll probably do that tomorrow and tell you the result.

Sorry man i have the game on PS4, i was gathering the materials to make the Zero Dawn Horizon Event armor for the palico. I'll take a screenshot and post it tomorrow.

Thank you for taking your time and letting me know about this. I really appreciate it :)

No worries! :)

Nice overview about the other games of this series! I play Monster Hunter now for the first time - and yes it is a great game! But some parts could be even better: https://steemit.com/gaming/@sn0w-fox/let-s-talk-about-monster-hunter-world
