Monomad Photographic Contest Week #8 - The Old Waratah Post Office
This was the second Post Office built in the mining town of Waratah in Tasmania. The first was built in 1882. It was replaced by the building in the photograph in 1913. I looked up the old newspapers from the time and found this report, from The Daily Post of Friday 30 May 1913 :-
New P o s t Office. - The new post office is fast nearing completion, the contractor (Mr. Greenhow ) having a good staff of workmen employed. When completed this will not only be an ornament to the town, but will be a great convenience to residents, as the old office has been for years altogether too small for the requirements of the town.
The town of Waratah sprung up after the discovery of tin at Mount Bischoff in the 1870's. By the turn of the century the population numbered several thousand. This was the first town in Australian to have electric street lighting. Today there are only around 250 people in the town and the post office building above has been out of service for many years.
