Sweet tooth - #monomad Tuesday Challenge

Monomad tuesday.jpg

Laos was a crazy place.

Not that the city streets were busy, or that there was a lot going on...in the traditional sense, but as someone who had never experienced a developing nation first-hand, it was amazing. By this point in my backpacking trip I'd already been through a number of countries, but none had felt as raw as this one. And when I say raw, I don't mean uncivilized. The people I met were friendly, the streets seemed safe (even when I got propositioned by a transgender hooker on a moped late at night), and there was this positive energy you could feel just under the surface everywhere you went.

There were a lot of stories I heard about the countryside.

How never to drive on any highways except the ones with an A rating, lest you run into drug cartels and have to buy your way out...from a guy who lived on the other side of the law. But, that's a different story, hehe. I meet the most interesting people when I'm out and about traveling. Not sure how it happens but, it does.

I caught these two at the food stand one morning.

Young monks, they were clothed in the brilliant orange of their religious position. For me, its strange to think about kids entering into a monastery, living that lifestyle, from the age where I was busy trying to get good grades in my Spanish immersion class...but, for them, normal. I'm pretty sure once they're old enough they can decide whether to stay or go, but, still, so different from the world we're used to. Different cultures, different norms, and all that.

Were they grabbing sweets? Some bread for their order? Or just saying 'hi' to the lady they greeted every morning? After this, where were they headed? So many questions that arise looking back at these pictures again.

Hope you enjoyed this image and the story behind it!
Michael

That black and white image there is very interesting. Seeing them in traditional outfits, it's like one of those photos you find in historical encyclopedias. Really well caught sir :-)

I suppose everywhere has it's local dangers, but a bit of local knowledge under your belt and you can avoid most of the trouble.

Pretty much. There are more dangerous places, but situational awareness does wonder for safety.

Got some more pics of monks around the city. Might drop some more tonight, hehe.
