Scam Alert!

in #money6 years ago (edited)

Today I am starting a new series of post where I'm gonna display all the types of scams I have come across.

< Version en español >

I am already doing the Free crypto and Airdrops series currently on week 2, feel free to jump on in case you missed it.

Back on topic, Why do I have any saying on this? well, I myself am a director of a currency exchange (which i created to protect people from scams since I was a victim too), have been CEO of the exchange for two years now so, I have seen so many failed (and successful too) attempts of scams.

Mail scams.

This one has become a classic one. It's enough for the scammer to know you have an account on a certain platform or certain exchange and know your mail, then they create a FAKE mail for you click it and follow the links inside.

Let's say you have an account on Bitfinex, then the scammer sends you a fake mail trying to make you believe its Bifinex and for some random reason you need to login asap.

Once you follow the link you will land in a fake website that will catch your data and then you are lost.

Usually, the mail says they are monitoring account or that your account has been suspended or that there was an attemp of hack in your account so you need to login to change your password.

It's good to mention they need to use Phishing which in terms of hacking means " is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and money), often for malicious reasons, by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication "

JUST TODAY I got a fake mail that tries to steal my Paypal password

How to be safe?

Let's review the mail above which is a perfect example:

in the number 1: we have [email protected] , which obviously is fake. If Paypal is going to write to you they will do it from @paypal.com not anywhere else.

in the number 2: We have mess up, ridiculous and plain weird language. Yes, sometimes scammers mostly in poor countries, they tend to have poor language and sometimes it's even funnier when they try to look legit, they just can't.

The way they write, edit, think is just wrong so they mess up, and most of the time THEY ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL at anything so that's why they end up stealing from others.

in the number 3: The buttons, format, images all wrong. Since they usually don't have the actual layouts of the mails since they are not Paypal in this case, the buttons they have for the mail aren't just right.

in the number 4: Again, the mail is all mess up since they have poor programming skills, everything is fast, messy and on the go, they don't pay attention to details.

If you happen to click one of those mails you still might not be in trouble as long as you don't provide your credentials.

For all the websites you go, always check two things:

1.- the address at the beginning must be in green.

This is the SSL certificate and all the important websites have it, it means the website is secure and is the original one.

As far as I know, you gotta pay for these certificates and scammers usually are too lazy and don't wanna spend on anything.

2.- Check the spelling.

Scammers trick you into believing you are contacting someone else changing the spelling it's not the same i, from ì, or í, or ¡ they are all different. it can happen with o's and 0's and so on.

So mostly pay attention, your money can go away really fast, so it's your job to stay safe.

Learn as much as possible, we are evolving truly fast and scams sadly evolve too.

Thanks a lot my friend i appreciate it!

Nice post & good suggestion.
We should always careful to input our account & password in any website. Without judging we shouldn't do that. Precaution can safe us from unpredictable trouble.

Yes my friend, and to be honest one the worst part is the pain you suffer when losing money. It's not that money is the most important thing but for me as an investor time = money, so losing money it's like losing a part of my life, the part I did spend making that money.

Most people when they recover from scams they act brave and hey its all good but man sometimes you will never recover that my you can only learn and be better every day.

yap. right my friend, time=money for everywhere & everythings. But when we have done something unconciously by mistake then we have nothing to do without self consolation. There is only one things left that is learning, so that we will not do the same mistake again. Precaution & carefulness can safe us sometimes.

Hope your post & share can help us learning and be aware about scam.

Very good contributions, you are right in everything you mean. There is one thing that I have always said and that is for investors always have to know how to manage and is "risk management" a practice that we all should know how to use when we want to undertake.

Thanks a lot. There must be a proper risk management for every individual.

Taka care.
