Everything I Needed To Know About Steemit I Learned On Discord

in #minnowsupport7 years ago (edited)

So you're new. We all were at some point. We all gave our best work for pennies from a handful of people that happened to see our stuff. This is our time, and time is not cheap. I have struggled. I still struggle, to be honest. But what I have learned is that this is a job - thanks @sircork!. We can't just throw up a post and expect people to notice our greatness. We have to promote ourselves, promote others, build community, and be responsible users of the best social media platform available. Let's face it, nobody else is giving us crypto for our thoughts.

I comment on posts, how else can I promote myself?

I am so glad you asked, fellow minnow. There is this lovely little thing called Discord, and in Discord you can find pretty much anything. For instance, @shadowspub hosts a wonderful user-friendly session called Pimp Your Post Thursday. Here you will find Steemians from all over the world that come together to share and discuss their posts. We talk about everything from Cryptocurrency to Pinball - special shout-out to @steemitgraven29, whose pinball dream is coming true. He just launched his pinball specific Steemit account. Check out @pinball-players! This is just one of the many ways that you can both meet other Steemians and promote yourself, or others. If you would like to come by and check it out, PYPT is hosted at 11:00 AM EST, and then again at 7:00 PM EST on Thursdays. Stop in, it would be nice to see you there!

Great! Now how do I build community?

There are several community servers on Discord, so there is something for everybody. If you're a Veteran, I would highly recommend checking out @sgt-dan's Duty Hut. If you're interested in learning more, pop on over to his blog and introduce yourself.

Are you a woman who exemplifies everything bad ass? Brains, creativity, strength of character? Or a man who supports them? Then #TeamGirlPowa might be for you. Thanks to the invite of @limabeing, I have learned a lot from these lovely ladies of Steemit. I've learned about team-building, curating quality posts, enjoying the girl things in life, and that Soup For Sluts is actually a thing - thanks, @techslut. If you're interested in being part of Team Girl Powa, reach out to any one of us with the Team Girl Powa banner on our posts, and we can get you headed in the right direction.

Another great supporter of bad-assery in women and speaking of minds is @battleaxe. Her posts are in your face, blunt truths about the platform and how it works. Both helpful and cleverly creative, she was one of the first people that I met when I joined Discord. I have learned to not pay attention to what others think. Just do me. If you see something you don't like? Say something. Don't be afraid to call bullshit when you see it.

These are only a few, and not even all that I am a member of. There are TONS of communities out there, don't be afraid to join any one of them that you feel suits you!

You mentioned responsible usership; what's that all about?

That's easy. Don't spam. Don't plagiarize others work. Be mindful of what you have. The first two I already have down. Being an author makes plagiarism one of my biggest peeves. We work hard here. We spend hours on our posts. Too hard to have someone take our work to post it as their own. What I did not know was how to be mindful of what I have. When I looked at my wallet and saw the Steem Dollars, I thought that they were exactly that. They're not. Thanks to @beanz at VO.TU. I now understand the value of it. I have learned to research before sending SBD to a service for an upvote or resteem. In fact, I now know that community will get you more upvotes than any service out there. If you're active.

Steemit is like Democracy. It works if you work it. But you have to be willing to put in the work and the time. Not everyone that lands here will be successful and that's just the way life is, but keep plugging along and before you know it, you just might land at the top where you want to be.

Thanks for taking the time to stop and read my work. I have really enjoyed my first 3 months on Steemit, and I look forward to the next 3. Cheers to all who helped get me here!
