SAVE YOUR PASSWORD 10 TIMES: A recap of my timeline back to Steemit
Hello Steemians! I want to say "fellow Steemians" but it doesn't feel genuine. I can't help thinking I'm on the outside looking in. This is my second account because I lost my password to my first account -- two years ago. For reference, I originally set up when Steemit gave you $5 to start your own corner of the Steemit universe.
I was writing for about a month and I thought I had potential to be an original voice to the community before I locked myself out and gave up.
During my self imposed exiled I checked up on my old account and would admire my one article that breached the $5 mark. It was a long time before I registered my new Steemit account. The whole process was a self contained saga -- A quiet fight I would have with myself every few months -- that eventually brings us to this article.
Here's my timeline:
- A few months of denial, anger at myself and finally depressing acceptance
- Doing nothing about creating a new account for a year
- Delusions of grandre and my absolute success on Steemit
- Being terrified to burst my confidence bubble by trying and failing
- Coming to terms with my limits and probability my blog will go nowhere
- Right back to Delusions of grandre and my absolute success on Steemit
- Talked to close friends about Steemit, my old account
- Unintentionally made my private and imaginary struggle about my talents and where my writing fits in Steemit very public
- Forced myself to make my imaginary new Steemit account a real thing in December, 2018 and finally writing my first article, this month.
- As expected -- Radio silence -- In a word, Failure.
- A few days of denial, anger at myself and finally depressing acceptence that I missed my chance on Steemit followed my first article.
- I managed to trick myself into being Free to finally write an article without an imaginary burden of success.
- The burden is real and I still wanted to have a voice on Steemit.
- Spent days writing a passionate review of my favourite TV show, The Office.
- Once again -- the familiar pit in my stomach formed as I watched my article fade into obscurity.
- A few days of being bummed out
- Back to the grindstone
I think the one thing I learned over the last 2 years is that if you really enjoy doing something -- you should do it for yourself -- even if you're the only one to ever read it.
There really is something powerful about having your thoughts preserved; however trivial or strange they may be. I respect every single person on this platform even if I may disagree with some of you. The world needs more creators and Steemit is full of them.
I guess the whole point of this article is to show literally even just one person that it is worth writing your thoughts down on this platform -- however small your audience.
Thanks for reading!

Hi and welcome here! When I started on steemit, my biggest problem was to find interesting people to interact with. So, to help newcomers getting started I created a directory with other interesting and or talented steemians to follow or interact with. Feel free to check it out at https://www.steemiandir.com I am sure it will help you find like-minded people. Enjoy your stay here and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!
Hi there! Thank you very much, that is a really great idea. I am going to start using it right away -- truthfully I have had a little trouble navigating around Steemit because of the huge variety of content. I really appreciate the offer to reach out; I'll definitely take you up on that as well!
The thing with writing on Steemit, is that you really need to have followers or communities to join in with, or to search for challenges or contests to join in with to start getting your account out there.
It's like starting on Twitter for the first time. You'll send out your first tweet and it's very likely no-one will ever see it. Same here: you'll write a post you spent hours slaving over and no-one will really see it unless you have people following you or an active community, or someone interested enough to search tags instead of staying in their bubble.
For instance, I'm only here because I decided to check out the #introduceyourself tag -- which I very rarely do -- because I'm looking for possible people to delegate to, knowing how restrictive it is to post when you don't have much power.
That is what I keep telling my partner and has been my motto here too. :)
Anyways, helloooo and welcome to Steemit for the second time!
Thank you so much for the kind words and guidance! Your advice is definitely something I will take to heart to improve my blog and get more involved in the community. I really appreciate you taking the time to reach out and let me know how to move forward on Steemit... Are there any communities that you would reccommend for someone getting started?
Also if you ever wanted to collaborate with someone with no Steem power at all -- I'm always here trying to think of new articles! Anywhoo, thank you again for your very helpful comment!
No worries! :) I also gave you a small delegation of 50SP - it's not much, but will enable you to comment and post a bit more and upvote, generally interact, just a little bit more.
At the moment you can do:
Which you can find at - https://steemd.com/@theroachmedia
As for communities, it really depends on what you're interested in! :)
You're from Canada... I'm not sure if there is a Canadian community or if it's all integrated with @steemusa, but a lot of countries have their own little community groups.
@freewritehouse has a vibrant community of writers, both fiction and non-fiction, and general writing. Also, @mariannewest has a daily writing exercise where she'll announce a prompt and you'll write whatever comes to mind in 5 minutes. Doesn't have to be fiction, real, a dream you might have had, or even make sense!
There are a few photography communities and challenges, contests, professional, beginner, amateur - @photocircle is one of them - @steemit-mac is a photo-a-day monthly author challenge. #informationwars if you're conspiracy minded. @steemsilvergold if you enjoy collecting precious metals.
@steemitbloggers is a good community account to follow! They resteem a lot of interesting posts from their community members each day and could be a good way to find people. Maybe try to join them as well once you're a bit more re-established, but they do have high quality and communicative standards. :)
@minnowsupport is another good one. They also have one of the most populated Discord groups... actually, just looked in and they do have a team-canada chatroom, but I have no idea what the account name is for Steemit. But @minnowsupport run the PAL Discord and you'll find a lot of active steemit peoples there. They also have an upvote bot that you can use once every 30 hours. It's not a giant upvote, but helpful for when you're starting out. :)
That's all I can think of at the top of my head... 7am at the moment and my brain just flat-lined, haha. But hope the information helps a little bit!! :) And that you find something.
Oh and I should add!!!!
If you have a wordpress blog you can link it to steem with the @steempress plugin - that's what I use for most of my posts and it's been instrumental :)
Also, there are a couple of games - steemmonsters.com (@steemmonsters) and drugwars.io (@drugwars)
@Partiko is a great Steem app to use on your phone
If you post on twitter, instagram, etc you can #share2steem - @share2steem - I'm not too sure how to use it, personally, but it's helpful.
@actifit has an app which is an exercise/activity tracker on your phone and you can post to steem each day and get rewarded for your activity (if you get over 5000 steps walked). :)
@steembasicincome is very helpful! A lot of people hold challenges and contests and things and reward people with steem basic income shares (SBI) - the more you have, the more of an upvote you'll get automatically on each of your posts!
:D
I honestly can't thank you enough for all of this! I really can't believe you would take time out of your day to help a stranger start their blog... I'm actually shocked with how much info you gave me and I'm quite happy I asked you. I actually feel like I finally have a direction I can go to get more involved in Steemit. I am pretty excited to start a few contests -- especially the daily writing promt. Thank you again, it really is amazing to be given help like this! I started following you as well and I look forward to reading and upvoting your material!
No worries 😊 I'm happy to help and if you have any other questions, I'll try to answer!
The main reason I checked out your post was because of the "Save your password!!!!!!" thing. 😂
I had a recent heart attack with my own password when my old laptop exploded and I hadn't backed my password up yet. I was very freaked out! Also learnt that if you need to recover your password, there's only a 30 day window from your last password change.
Luckily I was able to grab the hdd out and rescue everything.
But yeah, happy to offer some help! I've followed you too and am looking forward to seeing you around the blockchain as you get reacquainted 😃

You honestly will probably be the first person I come to if I have a question that I can't figure out!
The other reason I wrote the article was in the hopes someone would write their password down if they haven't after reading about how much it sucks to actually lose it.
I'm really glad you didn't have to go through what I did, Steemit would miss you!
Thanks again and feel free to get in touch if you ever need the favour returned!

Do you have the email you signed up with originally? You might be able to recover the account - but not sure if there is a time limit. 2 years might be too long.
I feel, like with every social media, interacting with people will make all the difference. Comment and have conversations with others, support others - and it will come back to you. And do join us for the freewrite. All are welcome.
I do still have the same email address and I tried everything I could for about a year, but at this point I'm just moving forward with my new account. It would be nice to be able to log into my old account, but I dream.
I couldn't agree with you more! I already feel much more comfortable navigating through steemit after talking to Steemians on this comment section -- yourself included!
I really can't wait to start publishing stpries for the freewrite -- it'll be really neat to see where my brain takes me.
Anyway thank you so much for taking the time to share some Steemit knowledge with me!
Hey there theroachmedia, welcome back to steem. :) Bummer to hear you lost your old account! I've had a few friends who lost their passwords also and usually they just give up when they do so good for you for giving it another try! I'd suggest backing up your password in at least two separate places off of your computer, like print it out or write it down and put them somewhere safe for storage just in case.
I really like what you wrote and how honest you were and especially your sentiments about how it's worth it if you enjoy what you do and even if you have a small audience. I think that's a great and healthy mindset to have!
If I could give you a few tips it would be to.. Find some communities or contests to be a part of, they can make your experience on here a lot more rewarding and enjoyable in my opinion. I would suggest @steemitbloggers as a good one and one that I'm a part of is the @ifc which is more of a contest but it's also a community as well of people who enjoy helping each other and competing in a friendly game.
After that I would suggest to socialize with others, visit other peoples pages and leave comments and try to make friends.. It might be useful to use the #introduceyourself tag to find and meet other new people as well. :)
And then finally just try to put out good content that people appreciate and grow your audience over time. It might be kind of quiet at first since you're just starting out and the crypto market has been kind of slow in general due to the lower values lately, though I think if you keep at it.. You might have some great results in time.
Anyways.. Good luck on here and if you have any questions please feel free to ask! I'll do my best to help and if I can't help.. I can probably/hopefully find someone who can.
Thank you for taking the time to share some guidance -- I really appreciate every tip and pointer I get!
I guess I just really liked the possibilities of Steemit, and I just like to write and take photos so when I was introduced to it, it always stuck with me -- even after I lost my password for months.
Don't worry -- my password is backed up in a few safe hardcopy spots and saved in 2 devices. I don't plan on losing it ever again lol.
Thanks again for the kind words, another reason I like Steemit is honesty -- there are so many genuine people who write with passion. It's actually a great motivator for me!
I'm definitely going to follow your advice and join the communities you reccommended -- feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to repay the favor!

You're welcome. And yeah I can relate! I had posted on Facebook for quite a few years before steemit and when I discovered it was almost impossible to be censored here and I could earn crypto currency I fell in love! Lol.. I just wish more people could see what I see as so many seem so content to stay on places like Facebook which are quite inferior in my opinion.
Glad to hear you got your password backed up good this time!
You're welcome again for the kind words and I agree, the people on steem tend to be of much higher quality from my experience compared to other social media. I've only dealt with a few people I didn't get along well with, for the most part people here have been pretty awesome.
Glad to hear you'll check out those communities! And okay, good to know. I don't really expect anything in return.. But I do hope we see you around the @ifc at some point in the future as I think it's a great community of helpful and supportive people and you I think you'd fit in well and you might like it! Though as I mentioned, I'm not looking for anything in return. I'm just happy to help in the ways I can. Peace and all the best to you!
