Maiden Voyage to Space | Microfiction

With smug satisfaction, Lukas re-read his note, full of dark pencil smudges on the wide-lined notebook paper.

“Dear Mummi,

Do not wurri for mi. I am going to space. I will bi back. Then they will bi scared of mi. They will not steal my toi. They will not hit mi. They will not call mi dumb. Then they will si.”

A gust of wind scattered the neat pile of eraser dust across the table and he looked up, through the open windows. Lukas clapped his hands with glee, running and tripping as he hastily wore his red cape.

Five minutes later, he was on the ledge. Lukas squinted in the sun’s fierce glare; he could not quite see the rooftop of the adjacent apartment buildings. He could only hear the cacophony of cars honking and tires screeching and people yelling. This made him wonder for a split second, will there be silence in outer space?

It was time to find out.

Arms outstretched like Superman, Lukas flew.

This is my microfiction, based on @jayna's prompt this week: "space".

Though I know next to nothing about comics and superheroes (ask my favourite person, he's the real comic buff), I do know that Batman is different from Superman. Batman has a black cape and Superman has a red cape. At the risk of this explanation sounding comical, I would just like to say the featured image (source: Unsplash) most fittingly conveys the mood and feel of this piece, except that the cape's a different colour from the one Lukas wore.

Now, for an overdue minute of silence - I felt really sad when writing the last sentence. Lukas flew. He really did.
