The great Florentine sculptor, painter, architect and poet Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy in 1475.

First he apprenticed to the Florentine master painter and sculptor Domenico Ghirlandio. His talents were soon recognized by Lorenzo de Medici who invited the young artist to his home. While with the Medici family he got the opportunity to study the family’s collection of classical antiquities. The studies clearly had a great impact on his work from the beginning of his real career as seen in his pieces such as ‘The Madonna of the Steps’.

Michelangelo’s greatest interest lay in sculpture, but it was the series of fresco paintings he carried out on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512) regarded as one of the crowning achievements of the High Renaissance that consolidated his fame, begun with the completion of his sculptural works such as ‘Pieta’ (1498-99) and ‘David’.

He was one of the outstanding figures of the High Renaissance and a creator of ‘Mannerism’. The statue of ‘Baccus’ and the ‘Pieta’ were the two works he created during the five years he spent in Rome and they enabled him to make a name there.

In 1501, he returned to Florence where he carved the gigantic ‘David’ a symbol of the new found confidence of the Florentine Republic.

In 1505, Pope Julius II called him to Rome to carry out two substantial commissions. The first, a magnificent tomb for pope Julius I, which ended in a disaster due to lack of funds. The other, a vast painting for the Sistine Chapel ceiling was his most sublime achievement as we have mentioned earlier.

Michelangelo was also a creative architect and talented poet. He was an extremely pious man who never married leading a very simple life in Rome.

Throughout his career Michelangelo sculpted and painted images of young male nudes beautifully formed and gracefully poised. In ‘David’, the famous sculpture of king David, Michelangelo’s early study of human anatomy is evident in the superbly realistic form of the young man who stands with slingshot held lightly, waiting for his enemy Goliath to come into his range.

Michelangelo passed away peacefully in Rome, in 1564.

‘The Sistine Chapel Frescoes’, ‘Pieta’, ‘the Doni Tondo’, ‘Medici Chapel’ and the ‘Biblioteca Laurenziana’ both for the church of San Lorenzo in Florence (unfinished). The magnificent cathedral of St peter’s in Rome (uncompleted) and ‘David’ are Michelangelo’s great and famous works.
