How Did You Meet Your Oher Half? Here Is My Story...

This is both mine and my wife's second time on the ol' marriage train. I'll talk divorce and getting out of a toxic relationship another time but today I would like to talk (hopefully) happier topics such as, how did you and your significant other meet? What were the circumstances that led to where you are today regarding your relationship with that person?

I met my wife in the late summer of 2012. I was recently divorced and was finally starting to slowly heal. Realizing and believing you actually aren't worthless goes a long way towards your overall well being. After a long summer of filling the pain with partying like I haven't in over a decade, I decided it was time to start to try to date a bit. I was not looking for anything serious but just to meet people and to start feeling better about myself again.

I did the bar scene but all I found were complete messes....which is saying alot as I was pretty much a mess myself. So based off of absolutely nobodys's recommendation, I figured "What the hell?", and started down the adventure of a lifetime with the wacky world of online dating. After a bit of research, I made a profile on OK Cupid. It was free and I just wanted to test the waters. What helped me out a bit was realizing I wasn't alone in what I had gone through. Well, specifically I was as my situation was extremely unique but being tossed aside. Feeling worthless. I know it sounds shitty but seeing that others were in similar boats made me feel a tad better.

I went on a handful of dates. Some multiple times....some just once. I luckily didn't have any bad dates. I had not so great ones and fantastic ones, but no horror stories. One date that was super interesting was with an absolutely beautiful and funny girl that I will call CRAZY3. We were talking online for a bit and then decided to actually meet up. She made me laugh. She was quick witted and really funny. When the date started she immediately told me that she had plans in about an hour and a half. It was like 8 pm. Well come like 11 I noticed the time and mentioned it to her all worried to which she replied something along the lines of "Oh I don't actually have plans. I just wanted a way out incase this went poorly." Smooth move. We sat outside after the restaurant closed for about 2 hours and had a blast. She was going camping a few weeks after and invited me to go which I thought was awesome. We made plans for Thursday night which was a few days away and I was feeling good.

We spoke in small spurts those next few days and all was well. The plan was still set and I was looking forward to our second meet. Thursday rolls around and I call her to confirm. No answer. I text. No answer. I got a bit worried that something happened because that's what I do. I got a reply later in the evening saying that she was with her friends and that she wanted to slow things down as they were moving too fast. I was shocked and baffled. I thought, "You invited ME camping!" "You asked what I was
doing Thursday!!!" It made no sense to me and I told her "No problem. Take care." That was the end of that. CRAZY3 was crazy...

It got me thinking how much I actually HATED the dating process. I am pretty straightforward and am not going to sugarcoat things or play games. I hated that several of the women I had dated from online were ALL ABOUT THE GAMES!!! One girl, that we will call CRAZY2 got upset and "scolded" me after 3 dates when I called her "sweetie". Something along the lines of "alright sweetie, have a good night". I pulled the plug on that one after that beratement.

So I was just about to give up on the online experiment when I got a reply back from a woman that I'll call CRAZY88...or Sharese. I had sent her a message and she replied with some witty retort. We went back and forth for a while and decided to do a phone call. Let me preface this by saying Sharese was recently out of her marriage as well. She had 2 kids from her replationship prior and was kinda in the same situation that I was in. Just a bit lost, looking for someone to spend time with and have some fun. These were the first pics I saw of her...

We decided to do our first phone call. Exciting!! I still remember most details about it. She worked in NYC and was on her way to work. It was a morning call and I was pacing back and forth in my sunroom. I was a bit nervous. Her voice did not sound like what I envisioned...to be honest I don't know what I expected her to sound like. I just remember us hitting it off. We made plans for a date later in the week and that was that.

Day of the date I went to Six Flags Great Adventure with my business partner. The plan was theme park during the day...shower. Then go meet CRAZ...uh...I mean Sharese. Well, life works in funny ways. My business partner drove and somewhere in the park (probably one of the coasters), lost the key to his rental car that we came in. He was getting a new car in a few days and had a rental in between. So we had to wait for a couple hours after leaving the park for that situation to correct itself. That screwed up the entire evening's plans. Argh!!!

I called Sharese to let her know and she was super cool and understanding. She said if I wanted to I could just meet her at her place and we could order something and watch a movie. That's what we did! I showed up on her doorstep with a box of random assorted bottles from my bar. I hadn't asked what she drank so I pretty much brought a full mini bar. Classy...I know. I remember being a bit intimidated as I thought she was way outta my league...c'mon...right?

We hit it off. We started seeing eachother regularly. I remember her finally introducing me to the kids which didn't happen immediately...understandably. Funny thing is we went out for her birthday one night shortly after dating and I get a random text from CRAZY3 asking what I have been up to and that she would like to get together. I replied and was nice and said sure, but said I was on a date and I would hit her up tomorrow. This was like my 3rd date with Sharese so I had no idea if it would work out. CRAZY3 got all huffy and irritated and said nevermind and I quote "I won't ever bother you again". Last I heard from CRAZY3...thank god!

After dating for a little over a year, i asked Sharese to move in with me. After some thinking and talking she did! The kids were with us most of the time and spent the rest of the time up at their dad's place. We all bonded and while it was a HUUUUUUUGE learning experience to date someone with kids...I love it and am thankful. I love those little fuckers as if they were my own...which they are! I'll sum up the rest quickly as I am sure you are falling asleep reading my drivel.

Wanna hear something awesome? After sever years of us growing close and living together, she decided to take the next step. SHE proposed to ME!!! She set it all up and I was absolutely shocked to say the least. I gladly accepted and I am so much more fulfilled with these clowns in my life. She is the cornerstone of what keeps us all functioning properly and I could not imagine my life without any of them. This was taken on the night she proposed with my trophy I received.
