Taking a Stroll Through the Street Market of Vila do Conde (Portugal)steemCreated with Sketch.

in #marketfriday6 years ago (edited)

Following up on my post Cute Caricature Graffiti in Vila do Conde (Portugal), today I'll share some photos of the Street Market which takes place in the same location, every other Saturday.

(Well, I've started writing this on Friday Night, but's Saturday already. Since it's still Friday for a few more hours in America, I'll join the #marketfriday initiative anyway... I hope that's OK, @dswigle?)

This is situated right in the centre of Vila do Conde, in a public garden called Jardim Júlio Graça.

IMG_7182.JPG

Since the garden is protected from the sun by enormous trees, it makes it a perfect place not only for this Street Market, but also to host several other events throughout the year.

IMG_7170.JPG

These huge trees were planted back in 1870, when the garden started to be developed. Back then, the city of Vila do Conde was beginning to expand towards the sea.

IMG_7172.JPG

If you're looking to stock up your kitchen, you've come to the right spot. You'll find everything here, from the common onion, garlic, cabbages to all kinds of fruits... The choice is endless.

IMG_7159.JPG

It's a very lively Street Market, seeing that the products are really good and very affordable.

IMG_7160.JPG

You'll find no stuff imported from China or Chile in here. It's all grown locally and sold directly from the producers to the consumers.

IMG_7183.JPG

Besides the unmissable vegetables, you'll find all sorts of edible delicacies. Such as these amazing mushrooms.

IMG_7176.JPG

Of course there had to be jams... from all kind and variety! What's your addiction? Strawberry Jam, Cherry Jam? Blueberry Jam? Peach Jam? Maybe Orange, Pear, Fig-leaf Gourd?

IMG_7165.JPG

I've got to admit I'm addicted to jam and cheese, so I brought two jars with me.

IMG_7184.JPG

One of Pumpkin Jam with bits of Almond and the other is Tomato Jam.

IMG_7162.JPG

For the meat eaters, there's also a corner... See those cages at the left, by the first tree?

IMG_7164.JPG

Here's a closer shot. There are a lot of different birds here. Poor things can't imagine how close they are from being cooked. 😶

IMG_7167.JPG

Unfortunately for these yellow little fellows, Duck Rice is a speciality around these parts.

IMG_7169.JPG

Here's some more meat... Dried meat, to be precise.

IMG_7174.JPG

One can't make a Duck Rice without some Chouriço (Chorizo). Right?

IMG_7175.JPG

Perhaps you're more interested in a good salad?

IMG_7181.JPG

Would you like some olive oil and vinaigrette for your salad? From what kind? There were so many different bottles I can't even begin to imagine what they all taste like.

IMG_7178.JPG

The lady in the photo above also sold some jams. Across her stand, there were more vegetables, potatoes... and even pumpkins.

IMG_7180.JPG

My little tour was coming to an end. This is the final shot...

IMG_7179.JPG

I couldn't leave you without a scene from a bored husband waiting for her wife to buy all the stuff he wants to eat later on. Typical! Ah ah ah! 😂😂😂

If you happen to be in Vila do Conde on a Saturday morning and you find this garden empty, then head towards the beach. Once you get there, follow the coastline until you reach the Caxinas neighbourhood. That's where the Market takes place, on the remaining Saturdays. It's a 20 or 25 mins walk from one place to the other.

(I'll have to go there tomorrow. I mean, today. To Vila do Conde, not to the market... So perhaps I'll make another post about that particular market.)

Edit: Well, Caxinas Market is not really an alternative. There's not much to see there. Just a small fruit stand besides The Fish Market I had posted about last month.

Please give me some feedback. Did you enjoy this article?

@trincowski signing out.

Sort:

Why did all the people in the photos look away from your camera? And I must say the all the sellers tables were organized neatly, and also it looks clean.

And the dried meat looks "interesting"!

They are simply minding their own businesses. 😉

Thanks for your comment, @putu300!

Okay, I just remembered your previous post about market where the sellers said to you," Forbidden, forbidden!"

Yeah, those didn't have any customers, on that moment.

that looks a wonderful place to while a way an hour or so @trincowski.

I would definitely visit if I was in the area. Not so keen on the live animals but the other produce looks very yummy. 😁

Yes, they really are. Very fresh and colourful, too.

Thanks for your comment, Gillian.

Thank you so much for joining us in #MarketFriday! Vila do Conde is a wonderful place to do a street market! It has everything! The history, the beauty and lots of people to make this a successful market!

I just love the variety that is offered here!

First of all, the cobblestoned streets are so very enchanting. I love towns that keep their historical pieces in place. It looks like a place I would love to meander through, even without the market. However, the market is full of wonderful treats! Oh, the jam and cheese are right up my alley! Fig-leaf Gourd? Is that really a jam?? I have never heard of it in my life, but, it sure sounds interesting! I have actually never had pumpkin jam either. I must need to try to make that. That sounds like another winner. Cheese?? Yes, please!

Everything is about as fresh as it gets, especially the poor yellow little fellows. I think we should outlaw Duck Rice, just for this post!

I want to thank you for taking us to a most wonderful market and giving us a wonderful #MarketFriday! It is always a pleasure to see you posting in the challenge!

Please leave the link to your post here in the comment section, so it can easily be found by others. (and me!!) They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

Tip!

Ahahah. Fig-leaf Gourd. I had to look it up in the dictionary. What a complicated name! We just call it Chila. Much simpler.

You really have to try it. The jams made with are Chila are so good you won't be able to control yourself. But my favorites are the Tomato and the Pumpkin Jam.

I'm glad you enjoyed my entry. Thanks for your awesome comment, @dswigle.

By the way, I left my link in your post but I see how you missed it. You have so many entries! Wow! 😱

My humble apologies! I did miss it!

Tomato jam? Do tell? Now you have me looking for a recipe! Thank you!! Have a good weekend!

Yeah, my mother and grandmother used to make it 😊
As far as I remember only 3 ingredients were needed: Tomatoes, Sugar and Water. But I might be mistaken. I was very young and don't remember it that well.

I love a good Farmer's Market like this, and what a beautiful day it was! I too can't help but feel sorry for the birds in the cage :( But everything else looks wonderful.

That is funny about the husband at the end! Of course, he'll be happy to be eating it all later haha

I'm submitting this to c-squared @trincowski; hopefully they'll stop by and show their appreciation too.

Thanks a bunch for your comment and support, Lynn. 😊

You are most welcome @trincowski!

If it wasn't for the mushrooms on the table it looks still like Summer over there.
Nice photos!

Yes, it rained for a day and now Summer is back. 😁

Thanks for stopping by, @lady-idra!

I’m a jam and cheeser myself . I like Guava jam and cheese on crackers or with bread , it’s sooooo good! They place looks great, would love to go to a place like that right now !

Thanks a lot for your comment, @dmilliz! 😃

What an amazing open air market and the food all looks so good, even the ducks, though I know it is sad, but I do love the taste of duck.

We have many Portuguese who settled here in my state in the USA last century so we have some wonderful Portuguese foods, and chorizo is used quite a bit in local cusines of dishes and soups.

Thanks for your visit.

I have to admit that even though I try not to eat meat often, Duck Rice is one dish I can't resist. Specially when the cheese is melted just right.

great post and adventure in a beautiful environment

I am glad you liked it, @princelouise!

I really did enjoy the article. I could notice that you are not a meat eater😄. It's been a while tho

I eat meat but I am trying to cut down on it. 😜

Thanks for your comment!

Haha that's cool. Tried cutting down on it, tried the first week, second week, the third week, the felt like a lion who has been hungry for days. I am not sure I am ready yet

You've had a wonderful walk.
I especially liked the sausage counter. ;)
