Handmade, Hand Painted Ceramics
It's Friday again, which for many of us means #marketfriday hosted by @dswigle. Today I'm going to post about handmade, hand painted ceramics again as those are always on the market and many people love them, including me.
Two plates with almost the same design. Birds, flowers, especially tulips are recurring decorating elements and these colors, red-brown, green and black are specific to Korond's zone. I am surprised to see the price tag on the bigger plate on the right, it's 40 lei, which is around $10. It's very cheep in comparison with the work that is required to make such a plate. It means hours of work, many layers of alabaster and then burning it in the oven.
Would you like a clock like this on your wall? I would if those number were a bit nicer.
This clock costs 25 lei, which is around $6. Would you work for hours to get $6 for a clock like this?
These artist haven't spent my time writing. Many of them has inherited the "business" or the profession from their father, grew up in the workshop and were taught to do the work to earn a living.
Most of the people would think these ceramic artists first showed some talent and then started to do this work but it's actually the other way around. They were taught to do the work, regardless of talent. I'm not saying these artists are not talented but that it can be learned.
This is my kind of board, these are fridge magnets. last year at the last craft market I saw these and didn't buy any, then I regretted it. This time I went prepared and knew I'm going to buy one and I did, a red one from the upper row.
I also knew I want a spoon rest and here they are on the left. I was prepared to buy one but when I saw the price said NO! That spoon rest costs as much as a wall clock, 25 lei, approximately $6. It's useful when I'm cooking but am not willing to pay that price. The other products are beautiful and you can find almost anything here for your kitchen. Jugs, napkin holders, butter boxes, vases, salt and pepper holders etc.
Small jogs for decorative purposes, maybe for souvenir.
Cups, money pigs and shoes. I bet kids love those money pigs, especially when they have to break it. The sandals on the other hand are a mystery. I have no idea what purpose would they serve, other than a decorative one.
This is my entry to #marketfriday hosted by @dswigle.
Thank you.
I love the way the bird is highlighted in the middle of the plate. These artists deserve my admirations on the long hours of perfecting their paintings!
I'm glad you like it, thank you for stopping by.
You surely know the way to my heart!!! Those are absolutely gorgeous! I cannot imagine all that work for only $10.00! That is not even including the materials and the paint. Yikes. You just made it with a value of about $8.00. That is crazy when you think about it that way.
I can honestly say that the Polish Pottery I bought in Poland was also very inexpensive, but Stateside, the price jumped up significantly. So perhaps, hopefully, some of these small vendors are exporting some of it. The workmanship is superb (except those clock numbers, I agree!) I probably would have selected a blue one from the top row on the bulletin board. A really pretty shade!
You say you can be taught to paint, but, I can assure you, I am unteachable! Truly! I love the spoon rests and I have several that I actually bought here and in Italy. Do you know what I use sometimes? If I am making spaghetti sauce and I used any canned tomatoes, I use the can to rest my spoon. LOL
Thank you again for bringing me such a wonderful market, just like you always do! I appreciate it tremendously! As always, I wish you a most wonderful weekend!

What a cool market and beautiful craft work, I love that first clock I would for sure pay $6 for it and feel bad for paying so little for it for all the time and effort put into it ;)
You're right, the price is way too low.
And for some artists here the prizes are crazy high it would be nice to get some balance ;)
Exactly! That's what happened with me when i wanted to buy a spoon rest, which had the same price as the wall clock.
Isnt it crazy how prices are so skewed so often
I agree.
