Playing with Pastel. Sky Blue. Many Magical Moments. Original Art. Original Drawing.

Sky.
There is only.
One beautiful and forever.
Changing Sky. Show me the way to fly to you.
~Ally.

Today's Color Challenge for Steemians as initially presented by @kalemandra is Friday Sky Blue.

I thought it would be a wonderful time to share a pastel sketch of the sky with my NEW Rembrandt pastels.

But before I started to draw the sky:

  • I went for a walk: Breathing in the refreshing cool air and basking in the aftermath of the blue moon energy, felt the soft dampened grass and the rough asphalt with my feet, smelt the roses, picked a few pink lilies and a small section of hydrangea, met a new walker and spoke to her dog.
  • Unravelled my NEW Rembrandt pastels.
  • Checked my email, Tumblr, Instagram and Steemit.
  • Cleared my drawing table of all the electricals, chargers and cords that I've been trying to sort: Haven't a clue what most of them are anymore, but need to keep them just in case. All neatly in a box now and off my drawing table.
  • Cleared the drawing table of all the papers I've been scribbling on for the past week or so, all the shells, batteries and light bulbs that were starting to accumulate.
  • Made some dandelion and burdock tea, laced with organic coffee to give me the extra boost I still felt I needed.
  • Watched a video with Australian artist, Louise Corke demonstrating her work with pastels. Louise builds up her hues, shades and tones by overlapping separate colours which allows the colour of the paper to come through. Video is below.
  • Louise gave some really useful tips. Something she didn't actually talk about: Her Artist's apron which is obviously going to be essential gear when working with pastel.
  • Mentioned this to my friend and voila: Out of the linen-press came, not a heavy duty navy apron, but a bright red paisley patterned cooking apron. Put it on and felt FANTASTIC.
  • Looked at my Steemit Feed. Big mistake. Slide effortlessly down the Rabbit Hole.
  • Unsure about which paper to start with: I gathered a few different papers: Parchment, Canson and Mi-Teintes TEX.
  • Did a little QiGong in the garden. Sat and observed our resident Brush Turkey.

Now to begin?

There's nothing so beautiful and at the same time so daunting as a blank canvas, or as in this case a blank piece of pale ochre parchment paper.

So I thought it would be a good time to show you the NEW Rembrandt soft pastels that I spent a small fortune on yesterday.

The first marks with Phthalo Blue:

Using the side of the pastel. Initially very lightly and then applying more pressure. And then some lines

Even though parchment paper is not a pastel paper or even a drawing paper ~ It was absolutely beautiful to draw on with the pastel. The dry pastel just glided on and the powder seemed to adhere reasonably well.

Adding a few more shades of blue and a muted pinky violet.

The ochre background and initial marks still showing underneath this second layer of marks.

And then:

I simply couldn't interrupt the flow of the drawing to take any more photographs.

And so this is the final stage of my first 'experiment' with drawing on ochre parchment paper with pastels.

Not exactly a masterpiece or a drawing of the sky. But a start, which for me is such a 'breakthrough.'

And now: A pastel drawing of the sky meeting the ocean.

After watching Louise Corke drawing in pastel, I tried laying down colour over colour and only blending with the pastel on the parchment paper.

It became painfully clear to me that the parchment paper couldn't hold a buildup of pigment in quite the same way as an actual pastel paper.

But although this drawing has its shortcomings, I still want to share it as part of my initial exploring of pastel on parchment paper.

Australian artist, Louise Corke describes how she works with pastels.

About my work.

I construct small assemblages with flowers, weeds and plants, rocks and crystals, combined with other natural materials that I find in the bushland or surrounding urban streets.

I love transparencies and layering and use different techniques to create backgrounds, where the details can become quite obscure. Never-the-less, these backgrounds are an integral aspect of my ephemeral artwork.

Sometimes a song or quote or other ideas/thoughts/words come to me, when I look at the photographs I've taken. Giving form to a short 'poem' to accompany the image.

I'm very much a novice in pastel drawing. But just in making these marks I've learnt A LOT that can now be carried into other drawings with pastel.

One thing I know now from making these marks is that I absolutely LOVE working with pastel AND:

Where there is love ~ Fear has no place. And I no longer fear the fear.

I love the sweeping feel of the final drawing. It's been forever since I've worked with pastels. This was a joy to read. Beautiful!

Thanks so much Katrina.

The article was mainly about all the distractions that happen whenever I'm about to do something new. Pleased you liked it. Maybe you'll find a few spare moments to work with pastel again too. Such a beautiful medium to play with.

I finally did a drawing of the sky too. 🦋

Thank you so much for participating and taking a break from everyday worries. It was my pleasure to read each of your words. :)))

Great writing I am honored @margaretwise

Thanks so much Margaret.

Usually, the words come after I've created a piece. But this time it's taken me the whole week before the drawing finally came.

I hope you like the drawing of the sky now too. Way to go but it's a beginning.🦋

Gentle soul of yours comes out even in paintings @allyinspirit. It will be very nice and it would make me happy to see more works like this :)

Thanks so much Dunja.

I finally did a drawing of the sky. I started off using very light pressure: Working mid blues down to the light above the horizon. And then adding grey tones into the clouds. Finally adding white with just a touch of olive green and lemon.

The parchment paper wasn't able to hold the buildup of pigment. So I now know that parchment paper will be good for line work and suggestions of colour.

Looking forward to working on 'proper' pastel paper now. 🦋

That looks like fun! I used to have a box set of the square chalk pastels, when I was an undergrad. Rembrandt makes some very nice art materials.

It was fun, once I finally settled into actually drawing @fotosdenada.

I have some of the harder pastels and will see what happens when they're combined with the softer Rembrandts. I gather you can lay a background with the soft pastel and use a harder one over it. Or maybe it's the other way around. Will have to experiment.

The colour range of the Rembrandts is so subtle. But as they are expensive, I'm a little limited as to what I can do. But looking forward to using 'proper' pastel paper now. 🦋

I am impressed, the Australian artist, Louise Corke perfectly creates her paintings. Pastels, gentle, that calm our soul.
Thank you for sharing your moments, your life experience and your thoughts. That to us, which beginners on this network means a lot.
In today's world, when honesty is rare, you have shared a part of your life.
I like your drawing, game line, the picture is rich and simply beautiful.

I've been looking at a lot of videos of different artists working with pastels now @zoricatech.

I've worked with charcoal, but it was a long time ago and I've already seen that working with pastel is quite different again.

I've always blended charcoal with my fingers, but Loise spoke about laying down blocks of colour and letting them merge as they overlapp with each other. So I tried that technique with this little sky drawing.

The parchment paper was not ideal for any more than about two layers of pastel ~ So I'll use other papers from now on.

Pleasure to share all the moments leading up to acutally starting. Just shows that I'm REALLY good at one thing ~ Procrastination. 😊

MAGICAL MOMENTS copy 12.png

Thanks for sharing your pastels! Glad you got going and into the flow. I lvoe that pinky colour. 😊

This story was as much as anything else, to show me how much I procrastinate. 😊

The drawing of the sky became so overdone. And the parchment couldn't hold the pastel. Which showed me that parchment will be great for line work and light suggestions of tone ~ But not deep layering.

When I had finished this post, I went out and looked at the sky again. At twilight: It was beyond anything I could ever draw, but something in me knew that I had to try to draw it again and again and again.

Yes. Love the dusty pinks Gillian. Hooked on pastels. Have a wonderful week-end. 🦋

Gillian, I finally did another drawing of the sky. Knowing not to push it to the extreme this time. 🦋

Well done Ally! It's beautiful. I love it! 💙

Thanks so much. Way to go ~ But the journey has begun now. and like @sunscape's card message we both selected. 😊

We just need to let go of everything that stops us from blossoming and do what we really love doing. 🦋

Yes. I'm just writing a post about my Steemit meetup yesterday and then I want to tackle shutting down the hosting and websites from my drop shipping business. That's been really hard to let go of. It was potentially very lucrative but I found it soul destroying.

Once you make the decision though everything will come in to support you. That's been my experience anyway. Hope it all goes smoothly Gillian and that your heart will hold no regrets. 🦋

Thanks @allyinspirit. It's good to hear from you this morning when it feels like the complete opposite of everything coming into support me is happening. Your generous spirit soothes me. 💙

wow. glad to know this.thanks for sharing.keep it up

Thanks for your visit @aliv.

We can only know about some things when we actually do them. It's like that for me with drawing.

It's like that with Steemit too. We learn a lot when we write about our own experiences in life and then share them. 🦋
