Leaf Curling Spider
This is another species of spider from my backyard. It's the Leaf Curling Spider, Phonognatha graeffei, of the Tetragnathidae family. Although they are quite common, you don't always see them out in the open. Often, by day, they are tucked away in their curled leaf retreat. They usually use the native Eucalyptus leaves for their retreat. However, in this case the spider has used a leaf from an exotic Maple tree.
All of the photos were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens.
( All photos, videos, and text on this blog are by @mostly.nature )
The next shot shows the underside, or ventral view, of the spider.
...and here is a shot showing the curled Maple leaf retreat.
...and lastly, an older shot showing the usual curled Eucalyptus leaf. You can see it does a much neater job using the native leaves.
