A Brief History of Modakeke
After the Fulani conquered the Oyo Empire, the entire Yoruba Kingdom was thrown into disarray. Some of the people migrated to Ife to become soldiers/farmers. Because they had left their homes in haste, they had to survive in Ife by doing menial jobs. The Ooni of Ife at the time, Oba Akinmoyero was said to have shown them great hospitality. He went as far as giving the new settlers land to dwell and cultivate.
These people began to grow different kinds of food crops on the land given to them. Soon, they were grafted into the Ife Army and helped extend the Ife kingdom to Alakowe, its present boundary with Ilesa.
The land Ooni Akinmoyero gave the settlers was outside the walls of Ife. The land was hope to a species of bird called Ako (Yourba for Stork.) It is said that the birds regularly chipped "Mo-da-ke-ke-ke-ke" hence the name of the town, Modakeke

I currently stay in Modakeke. It is quiet a peaceful and calm area although it is yet to see much of civilization. The picture was taken by me.
