Abandoned Restaurant With Amazing Views And A Security Guard, Lisbon
We love seeking out abandoned places, but this was the first one with fixed opening hours and a security guard. It was cool but there was none of that adrenaline kick we had at the Abandoned Resort on Curacao, the Hotel Evropa in Macedonia, or the Indoor Ski Resort in Busan. But on the other hand, we didn't have any fear of getting robbed this time! Do you seek out abandoned places when you're traveling? Share your story! In the hills just to the northwest of Lisbon is one of the city’s more unique viewpoints. Although the former Restaurante Monsanto has been abandoned for years, its circular shell has remained intact. You’re no longer able to order a delicious meal, but nothing is stopping you from enjoying the views.
We were surprised to see a guard stationed at the entrance to the restaurant. Visiting an abandoned site is supposed to be slightly illicit, but that’s not the case at Monsanto. The guard waved as we entered, and we even saw a sign with opening hours for the viewpoint. The city must have realized that it could never keep the curious away from a spot this intriguing, so why even try?
The restaurant must have been remarkable when it was opened, and I wonder how it possibly could have failed. The circular architecture is weird, and the surviving murals suggest that Monsanto had style. Anyway, with a view this spectacular, it would have hardly even mattered if the food were bad.
Oh man, crazy timing! Literally, my friend was just talking about an abandoned place we should check out in Hanoi! I'm obsessed with abandoned things, lately. Abandonment issues, I guess, hahaha.
I love this! Do you think it failed because of a ghost? I always wonder why something so cool would end up failing, too! It doesn't make logical sense to me. Looks beautiful!
We didn't encounter any ghosts, thank god, since nobody wants to hear me screech! I think a lot of times is mismanagement or going against rules and such. I wish someone would open it again BUT keep the abandoned charm.

Someone should restore the building as either a restaurant again or something else. It has spectacular views!
We know a few abandon buildings here in Bangkok. In fact, we live next to a few half constructed condos and an abandoned hotel. Our area was developing back in the late 90s and then the Asian stock market crisis hit. Developers abandoned their plans...for 15 years, this area had loads of abandoned buildings, but slowly developers are finishing what they started. We're too scared to go inside any inside any of them as we're not a big fan of rats or snakes!

I think I would have a hard time to stay away from sneaking on one of those abandoned buildings in your hood! It makes Mike always so nervous :) .. me too but I try not to show it. I once go caught by security guards in Berlin at a abandoned amusement park, was worth it :)
You're more than welcome to try sneaking into these places in our hood. The abandoned hotel has a guard, but we wouldn't think it would be that difficult to sneak pass him.
An abandoned amusement park, sounds so eerie and one that Sam would be intrigued to visit, but probably be too scared to visit it at night. Becca just wouldn't visit it at all!
We can see the thrill of it, but our screams would single us out! 😱

That building looks amazing .. did you find out any information on why the restaurant shut down and as to why the building was never sold to someone willing to use it for any purpose.
