Don't be a freelancer if you can’t do these.
Every once in a while, I saw a lot of young people sharing on social media, describing their status, asking whether they should resign and try a freelance job/ start their own business.
After seeing more questions like these, I found that the reason most people don't want to go to work is:
- The complicated workplace relationship;
- The unfair check in to work system;
- The "overtime" that the boss insists on not leaving work.
But isn't everyone need to work?
What do people do to feed themselves if they don't go to work?
They don't want to go to work, so they asked: "Is there any way to make money without working?"
Every time I saw such questions, I feel the impetuous and confusion inside the questioner.
It is a dream to get rich overnight. In this world, not many people can earn money by lying on the bed.
Most ordinary people, if they want to feed themselves without rely on the job, they often need to pay more effort than when they are at work.
But even so, there are a lot of people who choose not to go to work and become a freelancer, and they life becomes better. Why is that?
I have summed up some commonalities from the people and found that:
It turns out that some people are not suitable to work for others, so once they leave the cubicle that binds them, they live more comfortably.
So, what kind of person is not suitable for work?
I give them a few nicknames, each nickname represents a class of people, if you don’t want to work for others, you can see yourself in these categories:
Generalists
Generalist is the people who have a more comprehensive ability.
Such people are often unwilling to be confined to a certain kind of function in the company, always want to expand their own value as much as possible.
But as we all know, many companies, especially the larger ones, have their own pipeline, and one department employee may be responsible for a small piece of content over the ages.
This small piece of content for the company is only a "part" of the great cause of existence, for individuals, these cannot bring any skills and value of ascension.
Busybody
In another word, “nosy people”.
You can look around and observe people around you: After finishing their work, they want to meddle in other departments tasks.
Once they see the other department’s work is not good enough, and they happen to have the ability to do better, but because of the limitations of the job, they cannot intervene and become worried.
Behind this "nosy" is ambition and job mismatch, such people regardless of the company, they will leave the company due to dissatisfaction.
For an example, a programmer, because he was unable to interfere with other departments, he finally chose to resign and became a freelancer. It turns out that he enjoys his freelance life because he was finally able to control everything himself.
Lone Ranger
That is, those who do not like teamwork, like to work alone and higher efficient if they do alone.
But the workplace is made up of departments and teams, and most of the work we are exposed to in daily life requires teamwork. It's a problem for people who don't like teamwork.
They will be slowed down by others slow progress and feel anxious, and also because the people who they co-operate with is not at the same frequency, and finally inevitably contradictory with people.
For example, a freelance writer, no matter what job he worked in the past, he ended up in a huff with team members.
He later concluded that he was not fit for teamwork and was better suited to work in a job that could be accomplished by one person.
He later resigned and become a freelance writer, not only doubling his income but also becoming a signatory to many knowledge platforms.
These are the kinds of people I've summed up that are not suitable to work, and what they have in common is the initiative to work to create more value.
If you're in these categories, you can consider stopping working for others.
But that doesn’t mean that you are suitable to become a freelancer. Most people who don’t know much about freelancer, they will ask: What is the status of a freelancer? Is it work whenever you want, if don’t want to work, just go travel. Have more free time, earn more than working for others?"
The next thing is about the characteristics of a freelance job.
So what kind of person is not suitable for freelancing? To prick the illusion that you are too good for freelancing.
First, freelancing must be self-disciplined. What is self-discipline?
You can imagine that one day all of your work can be done at home, the work of the content you need to set yourself, you can communicate with partners and colleagues by using the Internet, will you get up on time every day, and work on time?
A lot of freelancers, even after freelancing for a long time, lack of self-discipline will make them very anxious. A lot of people think of the "travel whenever I want", but also because of procrastination, delay the work, and finally increased the working hours, travel opportunities become less.
So if you need your co-workers, leaders, partners to urge you, and you often delay, don’t want to complete the task, then if you become a freelancer, you will defeat by the "self-discipline", not only not able to feed yourself, but also very easy to fall into self-reproach and suspicion, and even chaos and physical overdraft.
Like self-discipline, freelancing must be very responsible. Without the company endorsement and guarantee, you are your own brand and façade. Freelance is also a profession, the customer find you to cooperate, you will have to make every effort in the time required to complete the quality and quantity. Back out, delay, the loss of mistakes must be borne by yourself.
So if you like speculative loopholes, quit halfway or shirk responsibility when meet problems, then freelancing is not suitable for you. If you messed up, no one will help you, not only that, you will also affect your reputation, and it is difficult to receive job again.
Finally, being a freelancer requires a strong ability to withstand stress and risk of failure.
The person who really engages in freelancing, if you ask him what freelancing is, the first thing they think of is not "freedom", but "instability", followed by "anxiety".
So, if you've been doing some easy work in the workplace, and easy to break down with a bit of stress and difficulty, then freelancing is not for you. Because most freelance jobs start every day from the moment they wake up and think "where is the money comes from today", the frequency of stress and anxiety is almost daily.
I know a lot of people in the freelancing, not only they don’t get more freedom, but instead gave birth to a heap of disease: depression, anxiety, manic disease ...
Therefore, people who are bad with stress and can’t afford to take the risk, I suggest you stay in the workplace for a few more years, get more experience, and then only consider about freelancing.
I said that there are so many risks in freelancing, not intentionally scaring you off. But I want to let those who disgust to work, want to escape the 9 to 5 life, and interested in the freedom of freelancing: doesn’t go to work is not equal to not working, You should not choose to freelance because you want to escape from work, and shouldn’t be for the pursuit of freedom life.
If you are at work, you are a person who is lazy, does not like to take responsibility, and does not actively create value, then freelancing is not for you.
You should stay in the company, at least you won’t starve to death.
