It Is Amazing What A Dollar Will Buy

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I took a dollar to the Salvation Army Thrift Store today and walked out with an amazing haul.  I'm a book hound and love to read when I can. I often go to thrift stores and pick through the books, but today the Salvation Army had a sale. 10 books for $1.

Here is what I found...

3 - Clive Cussler Books: Black Wind, Lost Empire and Spartan Gold.  I'm a big fan of Cussler and I will buy any book I don't already have. Today was a good day. Here is a blog about Cussler - This Is How A Man Relaxes

2 War Books - American Heritage History of World War I and Great Land Battles of World War II. I love war books and have a pretty impressive collection.

2 Prepper Books - Popular Mechanics Do-It-Yourself book and a First Responder text book. These books are put into my prepper collection to have hard copies of things I may need in a disaster. These are good to have and good to add to the collection.

1 Kids book on Electricity and Magnetism. This is for my son and family. There are a lot of cool experiments we can do at home.

1  Pat Roberson's book called The Secret Kingdom - Now I'm not a Pat Roberson fan, but this book is a first edition and signed by the author. One listed on Ebay for $35

Not a bad day, but isn't it amazing what a dollar will buy. There are hours of entertainment, tons of new knowledge and some information that could be helpful in a disaster.  In a society where many value themselves according to what they have, I try to add value to my self while spending as little as possible. lol

Do you like reading or digging through thrift shops? Let me know in the comments below.

To my followers, you are the medicine that keeps me healthy.

I wish my thrift store was this cheap! I think they do something like 40% of the cover price...

40%... yikes... There are a lot around here. There are five Goodwills within 10 miles. Plus tons of other small ones. Normally the Salvation Army sells them for 5 for a buck, but the special had them 50% off that... lol. I only bought nine... the pickings were a little slim, but I got 3 cussler books. yay.

Used books are so cheap these days. People just want to get rid of them... myself included.

Sweet, I wish I was more of a reader. I love hard cover books. They are easier to hold and therefore makes for better reading. I should get more survival books or how to books for my collection.

survival books!

I don't read as much as I like but make time here and there. I go in waves where I'll read a lot for a month then take two off and then read again. the prepper books are good to have. Hope all is well.

All is well, just lurking around looking for my friends to post :) have you heard of the new creative writing challenge going on?

Great idea to get Prepper Books in physical form these will come in handy someday!!

I've been picking them up for about a decade and have quite a library for doomsday. That is if I can keep my books with me when disaster hits. My bug out bag will be full of books and a food bar. lol

You will be one of the few that has a clue of how to do stuff... the majority can only do one thing: facebooking ;)

HAHAHAHA, that is true. lol. I actually have a lot of manuals and pdf survival books and videos saved on an old iphone. I also have 4 ways to charge it and it is sitting in a Faraday cage. I'll have the info I need. I feel like information will be worth a lot if those days ever come.

I love this. And I also hate it, because I have a bookshelf full of stuff I'm scrambling to find time to read. Good thing the local thrift store is a good ways away, or I'd be in trouble. On the other hand, it might help me with my Amazon habit...

hahaha, whenever I feel some urge to buy something... and it is rare, I go picking through thrift shop book sections. I feel the same way. I have tons of books I'll never read, but I get through about 25 or so a year. They do come in handy with the kids when they have curiosity. I don't always send them to the computer, I make them dig through the shelves for what they are looking for. Thanks for the great reply.

I wish my kids would do more of that. We have hundreds of books right here in this room, and I doubt they've picked up ten of them, except to hold up their blanket forts. But I'll keep putting more on the shelves, because it's what I do.

hahaha, that is all you can do. We build a lot of forts too. lol. We use books that way as well.

@walkingkeys, congrats on the great finds.

I feel that our culture has lost the art of finding hidden treasures. Sometimes all that means is going to a local thrift store!

Thanks. I agree. Ordering online is too easy, but going through a thrift store takes work. lol Thanks for reading.

You are definitely welcome. Keep up the great treasure hunting!

Thrift stores and book stores are two of my favorite places. Next to beaches, with my thrift beach clothes, picnic basket, umbrella, and book in hand.

LMAO... you sound like me before I had kids.... Hopefully where I will be when they grow up. You got a new follower.

It's definitely a future potential, if you want it. At least, these are the things I tell myself. lol. I followed you after I saw the part of this post where you bought a book because it was signed.

All that was definitely worth a dollar. I love thrift store shopping for books it's about the only place you can find that much stuff for a dollar 💵.

Thrift shopping is where it's at! I fell better about spending 30 dollars for 5 pairs of pants, clothes, and shoes instead of going to the mall and getting 1 shirt for the same price. Ridiculous!

Ya know... I have a sh*tload of books I want to unload. I never thought of bringing them to the Sally Ann...
