Food for thought

in #life6 years ago

So I just scrolled through my Facebook feed and again, the first thing I read was a really shocking article about a 15-year old who apparently killed a classmate at school, published by Spiegel Online. Now, this is of course very tragic and I am sending all my thoughts to those concerned, along with a lot of strength to deal with this terrible situation. But for now, the purpose of this quick blog post is another one.

Scrolling down to the comments on the Facebook post, one can read a lot of comments like "But what is wrong with this world?" or "What is wrong with our society?", "Why are there so many people not respecting the lives of others?" or "It seems like every day there are more people who are ready to use violence."

And you know, I am not saying that everything was better in the past. I am only 27 years old, so I can't even tell. And I am not sure if the world really changed at all or if the fact that nowadays we have access to such a big amount of information just makes us think that everything is getting worse and worse - because now we are actually able to know all of those things.

But let's get back to the point: I was wondering what kind of people post the comments mentioned above. Are they friendly people, like in their everyday life? Do they greet the employees in the supermarket or say "Thanks, have a good day.", when they take their bags and leave? Are they willing to help if any tourist got lost and is asking for the way? Or do they apologise for accidentally stepping on someone's feet on the underground?

I am saying this because I believe that a "good world" or a "bad world" does not depend on a few single individuals. We are all in this together and with our daily actions, we all contribute to a better or worse society. The world will not change because people point their finger at others, saying "This is all your fault!". But I believe that together we can make a change, by doing small things on a day-to-day basis. We just have to start and be persistent about it.
