I've been feeling scatterbrained lately. I keep thinking that I need to meditate more - I make a vow to myself to make time in my busy days for silence and reflection, but it never seems to happen. When I was in Uptown today I read the issue of Tricycle (The Buddhist Review), which is always an insightful read. (It was half off, thanks to the slowly dissolving entity that is Borders.) I decided to relax and read Tricycle after I found myself caught in a Portlandia-esque 'technology loop', flipping between various social media realms and electronic devices until I felt stuck.

Appropriately, the article that caught my attention immediately was Lori Deschene's "10 Mindful Ways to use Social Media". Now, I search for articles like this for a living. But of all of the advice I've come across in the business and journalism worlds about utilizing social media, Deschene's ideas made the most sense to me, and I have never needed to hear them more.
She reminded me why I was attracted to blogging in the first place - not for attention or credibility, but to be able to share what matters to me with others - namely, my love for photography. Aside from urging authenticity, kindness, and regular breaks from social media, Deschene emphasizes the important of experience, versus coverage - which brings up the subject of mobile blogging.

The article reminded me how easy it is to get caught up in this alternate reality of seeing and reporting. I feel constantly overwhelmed by the immediacy, intimacy, and complacency that smart phones provide, and it's good to know that there are still people out there (even if it's just the Buddhists) who are looking to take a step back and live in the moment (without having to tweet about it).

That said, this is my last post for today. I'm shutting it down.
