5 of the best places to find white stuff in Cape Town this weekend

Snowkernit

What is it that makes Capetonians leave the city to seek it out for just 1 day?

The cold, fluffy, white stuff called SNOW of course!

  • Perhaps it's because of its rarity? Here today, gone tomorrow?
  • Perhaps it’s the not-so-childish yearn to make a snowman or snow angel?
  • Perhaps it's to have snow fights with the kids?
  • Perhaps it's to learn how to ski!
  • Perhaps it's the perfect opportunity to be first to record live on FB, or the perfect insta shot?
  • Perhaps it's simply to see what all the fuss is about!

For me, it’s all about experiencing the wonder of mother nature in different parts (especially those less-travelled) of our country-side; preferably from a cosy room complete with fireplace, good company and copious sherry (for medicinal purposes, of course!).

When we took a drive up to Ceres through Baines Kloof a few weeks ago, it was sadly still very dry, with the dams scarily low and a lot of the landscape still catching its breath from devastating fires.

The good news (for most Capetonians who have had to adapt to being water-crisis-activists), is that there’s an icy snow-front :snowflake: headed our way late Saturday/early Sunday, along with rain and flash-flooding.

If you’re thinking about heading out to check it out, here are 5 of the best places according to Capetownetc

Guinevere Farm

You might not see the snow on the farm itself, but Guinevere Guest Farm provides the perfect overnight stay (with mandatory fires and wine) to be within driving distance of it, and aren’t the views simply spectacular!

Forgotten Manor

I’m shivering just looking at this pic! :snowflake:

Forgotten Manor is a working fruit and sheep farm in Ceres offering a true farm experience, yet not far off the beaten track. In recent years there have been mornings when guests have woken up to a real winter wonderland – much like the photo above taken at the Manor.

Mont Rouge

Mont Rouge, in picturesque Tulbagh is central to snowfall in the region and finds itself surrounded by snow-capped peaks in the winter months. On Sunday morning, the minimum temperature at Tulbagh is predicted to be icy at close to zero degrees!

Matroosberg

The Matroosberg Mountain Range forms the highest point in the Western Cape – making it the most conducive for snow. During the winter months (June/July/August), the mountains are often covered in snow. So much so, that the private nature reserve has its own ski slope and ski hut! Several varying-budget accommodation options are available on the farm to suit day visitors and overnight guests.

Klondyke

A real cherry farm on the other side of Ceres, Klondyke receives a serious dose of the white stuff most winters. Often it’s just a dusting at the top of the Matroosberg Mountains, but at other times the snow lies thick on the farm. With the temperature set to hover around zero degrees in the early hours of Sunday morning at Ceres, there is a very strong possibility of snowfall.
