Drawings by tribal kids of the Wayanad forests of India shows creativity and imagination have no bounds!
Hi all! How's your Friday going?... I would like to share with you some drawings that were done by kids from a tribal village. Yup, thats right. These tribal kids were quite excited doing these drawings, depicting their life in the tribal village. It was amazing to see their enthusiasm and creativity in doing the drawings. A happy bunch, they were, after they showed us their work.
What is the backstory?
In February this year (2017), I volunteered for two weeks in a remote tribal village in the Wayanad region of Kerala with a group of 6 other people. The goal was to help improve the local economy of the tribal village by providing alternate means of income. In two weeks, we built two biogas units for the village.
We also became friends with the tribal kids, and on the closing days of our campaign, we organized a drawing competition for them with the theme centered around their village life. We provided the crayons and the paper. They brought their imagination and creativity.
Here are some of the drawings done by these kids. Their creativity and imagination surely knows no bounds and it inspired us a lot to see them present their work with a smile on their face.
I'll have a separate post on the complete details of the volunteer work (and how freakin' hard work it was) and how it has helped improve the livelihood of the tribal village, as well as providing alternte means of income to the families directly benefitted by the biogas units.

Indeed, it shows us how vivid and clear their imagiation is!
Well, also that they pay a lot of attention to the plants and trees and birds and animals and the landscape. That it's significant to them. No doubt British kids of the same age would be more capable of drawing a pokemon than drawing an anywhere near accurate tree leaf.
Indeed. That is the surroundings and the environment they are brought up in.
So to put my comment into perspective, I've been studying the role of nature connection and disconnection, here for example is an abstract for a paper regarding the rate of nature references in English popular culture. They found that Disney films were including less and less detail as regards natural life. These childrens pictures look like Victorian botanists notebooks by comparison. :)

Human connection with nature is widely believed to be in decline, even though empirical evidence on the magnitude and temporal pattern of the change is scarce. Studying works of popular culture in English throughout the 20th century and later, we document a cultural shift away from nature, beginning in the 1950s. Since then, references to nature have been decreasing steadily in fiction, song lyrics, and film storylines. No parallel decline is observed in references to the human-made environment. These findings are cause for concern, not only because they imply foregone benefits from engagement with nature, but also because cultural products are agents of socialization that can evoke curiosity, respect, and concern for the natural world.
I could not agree more. In popular fiction, children movies, songs or any such form of creative outlets, the aim has changed. I appreciate and love series like Planet Earth, the Human Planet, Planet Ocean and similar bluechip films that have done a fantastic job at showing us how amazing and interconnected everything in nature and this world is. Things like these should be made more and more for kids as well.
I believe that if you grow up more exposed to nature, wildlife and natural surroundings, you become a better, more balanced and more concerned and empathatic individual in your later years. The far fetched effects of such a childhood cannot be overstated. (example in point: me!)

WOW, Beautiful paintings, great raw talents, I particularly kind of love the first painting here, I could only imagine the time that kid spent to bring such tiny little details to life. And I also imagined myself crossing that bridge there! Lol. Beautiful work, all the paintings are great, and the last one with those different birds?, I love it.
