Why and how to declutter your room in 5 minutes?

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Sometimes  your decluttered room has a negative impact on your mood and thinking  pattern whether you realize it or not. Tidying up your room will  definitely make you feel a little better.  Our atmosphere has an tremendous effect on our minds, thus keeping a clean room will help you think more clearly. A reason why you might find offices so neat is to improve the productivity of their employees. With less distractions around, you will be able to focus more thus improving your attention span significantly. Also, not only will it improve your productivity but it will elevate your mood too. Studies have shown that mess causes stress and may also affect your sleep. Only dedicating 5-10 minutes daily to tidying up your room can greatly affect your lifestyle.

Now that you are aware of the consequences of keeping an untidy room, here are the steps to keep your room tidy:

Step 1. Set up a timer for 5 mins:

Dedicate  a small period of your time to just clean your room. You are free to  adjust it to 10-15 mins. The quicker you can clean your room, the less  chances there are of you to get bored and give up.

Step 2. Pick up your clothes

Pick  up all the clothes that are lying around your room and throw the dirty  ones in a laundry bag / hamper. Now, if you are one of the millions of  lazy people, you may not have the patience to fold the clean clothes or  hang them on hangers. Then the solution for you is to either just stuff  them in your closet or to put them temporarily in a separate basket.  This way, you may have to fold you clothes or hang them only once in 4 days instead of doing it everyday.

Step 3. Make your Bed.

This  will take only 40-45 seconds. First, if there is anything on the bed,  throw them on the the floor. Next, arrange your pillows in a neat  manner. Spread your blanket / bedsheet over the bed, fold up the extra  part, and tug from one side to remove creases and folds.

Step 4. Organize your bedside table, dressing table and desk.

If  your bedside table has a drawer or a little cupboard, then put all the  unnecessary things lying on it inside. If not, then keep a small shoebox  next to it where you can keep that stuff.

For the dressing  table, arrange your perfume bottles, creams, and other cosmetics neatly  in a line. For women, make sure you have a jewelry box for all your  accessories. You can arrange your makeup on the table. But your room  will look better if not a lot is kept on the table.

Do the  same things with your desk as you did with the bedside table, put the  unnecessary things in the drawer. Arrange your books neatly by making a  neat pile or put them on a bookshelf. Hide all the wires of your laptop,  desktop, etc behind your desk or under the table. If anything is still  left on your desk that you cannot put in the drawer, arrange it neatly  on the desk itself. And lastly push your chair towards the table.

Step 5. Clean up the dishes.

If  you are kind of person who eats in your bedroom, you most probably have  a bunch of dirty bowls and plates and empty bottles lying around. Pick  up anything that belongs to the kitchen and put them in the sink. But if  you living in a dorm room and don't have a kitchen, throw the paper  plates and plastic spoons in the bin.

Step 6. Remove the random mess out of sight.

Now  collect the other things that may be lying around on the floor or  hanging off chairs, like your towel, magazines, empty boxes, remotes,  tissues, etc. Throw out anything of no use and put the rest away in  closets or drawers, out of sight.

Few tips to keep in mind :

  • Don't keep some things lying around just because you need it often. It hardly takes a few seconds to open a drawer or closet.
  • The more things you keep outside, the more cluttered your room will look.
  • Spray some air freshener, or light scented candles.

I'll be honest... the idea of taking cleaning tips from someone with the handle @slayer is not what I would have expected this Monday morning... but you nailed it! :D

Really liked the idea of setting a timer. That would be good for my easily-distracted brain.

Haha! Never judge a book by it's cover.

lol indeed.

Though this is easier said than done. When I read your name, my brain interprets as this:

Honey, if you saw my house, you wouldn't want advice from anyone named anything other than #slayer! LOL

Followed and upvoted. I spent some time studying Feng Shui and the logic that visual clutter is distracting seems to be the basis of how it works, when it works. You might have actually started something ticking over in my mind about something I can do right now that might help improve my mood and productivity. I don't have a very well equipped bedroom, no decent bed, or bed linen, my desk is a couch and coffee table, and everything is dirty and dilapidated. I have mostly concealed the worst of the mess that accumulates, and I don't also have access to cleaning facilities so my clothes are getting a bit manky now.

But I think reading this could trigger some motivation to try and optimise my situation a little more routinely, like you say, 5 minutes a day. In fact, I'm gonna turn out my trash right now.

The same thing applies to your IT gear as well. It was a big boost to my mood and productivity when I finally finished reconfiguring my equipment to help me keep my valuable data secured. I got my laptop back out of hock, and after several hours tearing my hair out trying to get its VGA output to put native resolution to the monitor, I had to adjust my plan and instead use my Fitlet mini PC as my main workstation, and dedicate the laptop to server duty. I have been running the configuration this way for a few days now, I need to double check that my home folder replication scripts are working correctly, actually, I should fire up the GUI on the laptop and see if it is the exact mirror of my desktop workstation that I think it should be.

Yes, it is working perfectly :) So now if I need to take a computer with me when I go out, it's got exactly the same build and configuration as my main desktop, and if one or the other has a data loss situation, there is still a valid copy available. YAY.

and thanks again for writing this post, btw.

I'm glad this article has motivated you, I'm sure it will affect your daily routine positively, because it did for me.
I recently incorporated this habit into my daily routine and it really brought out some positive results. This motivated me me to share this with the Steemit community , and I'm more than happy to know that this has helped you! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and your upvote , I greatly appreciate it :)
Also, I'm glad to hear that your issue got resolved

Oh hey, maybe you could add #steemtherapy to your hashtags on this post also, I just made a post with this and I had a positive response to the idea that it is a category that could become very important. The subject matter of a post need not necessarily be about how steem helps you live your life, but just the fact that it is a lifehack or other thing that helps you live your life better, and it is on steem, so, therefore, it is #steemtherapy :) What do you think?

I like the concept! Will do it soon.

100% !!° As "suffering" from ADHS i had to learn things the hard way It took me far over 20 years of hard work to get to that point. Having solved this, by following guidelines like that (and by hiring a clean-up person for once a week), it was THE game changer, far more than anything else for me. It has improved my companies, my customer relations, my personal life and even my dog likes it much more, because my time management suddenly worked like magic. It gave me time to focus important things, like my dog. House clean = Life clean! Nice Article!

Thanks for the positive comment!

Very nice and quick reading.
